More doom on the horizon? House Ways and Means sues for Trump’s tax returns.

I love it when good news comes in threes, it just makes my day. And following the news that there is starting to be strong indications that Russian trolls did help Trump in 2016, and that the darling Trump Baby Blimp will be looming over the National Mall on July 4th for His Lowness’ speech, I may as well let Axios complete the hart trick.

My newest bestest bud in the online news media is reporting that powerful House Ways and Means chairman Richie Neal has had quite enough of Treasury Secretary Ste Munchkin’s bullshit, thank you very much. And as such is filing a civil lawsuit in federal court to compel the Treasury department to comply with the committee’s subpoena, and turn over oodles of Trump’s tax returns, both personal and business. Axios does a nice job of summing up the basic situation, and what the tussle is about;

The lawsuit argues that a section of the IRS code requires “in mandatory terms that Treasury ‘shall furnish'” the House Ways and Means Committee with “any” tax return information that is requested, and that Trump has denied the request for what the committee believes is the first time ever.

In response to Treasury’s argument that the request lacks a “legitimate legislative purpose,” the lawsuit claims that nothing in the relevant IRS code requires an explanation. Even if a reason were required, the lawsuit argues that the committee needs the materials for its investigation into tax laws and policies related to presidential tax returns and tax law compliance by Trump.

It also argues that “the committee’s power to conduct oversight and investigations is firmly rooted in Congress’s Article I legislative authority.”

This is great news, and to my mind long overdue. I have yet to hear a single legal analyst on any cable news network, including Judge Andrew Napolitano on FOX, who doesn’t think that Richie Neal has a slam dunk case here. The law isn’t even black and white, it’s so stark that it’s called “black letter law,” and the Houses oversight makes a legislative requirement extraneous.

The other reason that this is good news is because the timing is right. Trump long ago burned whatever bridges he had with the judiciary. Judges don’t like being insulted, and they don’t like being described as rubber stamps. The Mango Messiah has insulted everybody from Judge Curiel in his Trump U case for being a Mexican, to the 9th circuit court of appeals for slapping him around on every ruling. T And Trump has shown the knack of “predicting” favorable rulings from the courts on indefensible cases, especially the Supreme court.he DC circuit court fast tracked the initial hearing on the Mazar’s USA lawsuit, ordering that they had to turn over Trump’s records, and in the last week or so, a 3 judge appellate panel in Washington heard oral arguments on the case. It is obvious that the court has no interest in furthering Trump’s obstructionist tactics, and are fast tracking the cases as they are filed.

Come on now, be honest here. Wouldn’t a nice, gift wrapped pdf file with 7 years of Trump’s personal tax returns in your stocking send thoughts of sugar plums dancing around in your head on Christmas morning? Yeah, ne too. Never too early to start my “wish list” I guess.

  1. This is what Nancy Pelosi has been waiting on…..the financials with indisputable facts of criminal activity, not merely he said-she saids…..numbers can’t be spun and they don’t lie……even in the Trump universe 2+2 still equals 4.

    • That may still depend…If the crimes that are uncovered occurred BEFORE Trump was inaugurated, public opinion may well be that it is not disqualifying for his presidency, he can be indicted and tried after he leaves…But a little something like laundering Russian money through his condos while running, or as President is a whole nother kettle of fish… l-)
