Hey, Corporate America! Wanna Help? Treat Voting Rights Like Your Bottom Line

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m overjoyed to have you all on board! And you can tell that you’re already having an effect, basically by the way that the GOP, especially the Senate GOP, is losing their shit.

But while it’s greatly appreciated, it is also at least partially retroactive. Whatever you do in Georgia, it is unlikely to for them to change the course they have already set. If nothing else, they figure they’ll wait you out.

But there’s a simple problem here. You can’t be expected, nor can you be effective playing whack-a-mole with 45 different states with GOP legislatures that are fueled by the pure purpose of maintaining their control, and where you may not have maximum leverage. But fortunately you don’t have to.

Come on! Are you people national companies, where you have the most leverage and corporations, or not? Then get your asses off of the bench, and get into the national game! Because that is where the issue will be ultimately decided.

As we speak, HR1, the For The People Act, is now officially known as SR1, and up for consideration in the Senate. That’s where the action is. That action is right in your wheelhouse. Because you have offices, stores, factories, distribution centers, and warehouses all over the country. Use them!

The Senate is where the action is because the simple act of passing HR1/SR1 negates more than 90% of the damage from all of the individual state bills under state consideration. It sets national standards that the state laws cannot override. This is where you need to put your full on pressure.

Do you have operations in Arizona? Then put the clamps on Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema to quit fooling around and reform the filibuster to make it possible to pass the bill with a 51 vote majority. Got operations or influence in West Virginia? Then get on Joe Manchin’s ass to get off of his high horse, and come down on the side of the angels.

And it isn’t just just about recalcitrant Democrats. What the hell? Sweet Jesus, you guys have been the monetary lifeblood of the GOP for generations now. Start using it to let them know that you support increased, rather than decreased voting rights.

You want to seriously get into the game, corporate America? This is the way. Because, no matter how effectively you coordinate, you can’t successfully fight suppressive voter laws in 45 states. Cut the head off of the hydra.

The ball is in your court corporate America. You can either pay false lip service to voting rights at a time and place that you can’t actually do anything about it, or you can put you can put your money where your mouth is, and put serious skin into the game. And believe me, we’ll be watching.
