What makes it intriguing writing about Trump world is that things which are so preposterous and which you say, “That can’t be true,” about end up being true. And the more absurd and outrageous they are, the more they turn out to be true. Vanity Fair ran an article on Donald and Ivana Trump in 1990. One of the amazing anecdotes it contacted was that Donald had a cousin, John Walter, who worked at the Trump Organization. Walter used to enter Trump’s office, throw the Nazi salute and declaim, “Heil Hitler.” Trump ate it up with a spoon.

A few weeks ago Trump made his “immigrants poisoning our blood” comment publicly and Newsweek picked up on the story. Now it’s going around Twitter/X and growing by leaps and bounds.

That last one is interesting. Is that the direction that Elise Stefanik wants to go? To align herself with this level of racism? It must be. The woman is not stupid. She’s got to know that this is exactly the ticket she’s trying to get onto.

Meanwhile, let’s stroll down memory lane. Here are excerpts from the 1990 Vanity Fair article cited to earlier. It explains a bit of how you and I got to be right here, today. All was foretold. People simply thought that it was too ridiculous to be real. Wrong.

It was spring, four years ago. Donald and Ivana Trump were seated at opposite ends of their long Sheraton table in Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post’s former dining room. They were posed in imperial style, as if they were a king and queen. They were at the height of their ride, and it was plenty glorious. Trump was seen on the news shows offering his services to negotiate with the Russians. There was talk that he might make a run for president. Ivana had had so much publicity that she now offered interviewers a press kit of flattering clips. Anything seemed possible, the Trumps had grown to such stature in the golden city of New York. […]

When it was Ivana’s turn to introduce herself that night, she rose quickly. “I am married to the most wonderful husband. He is so generous and smart. We are so lucky to have this life.” She was desperately playing to him, but Donald said nothing in return. He seemed tired of hearing Ivana’s endless praise; her subservient quality appeared to be getting to him. Perhaps he was spoiling for something to excite him, like a fight. Maybe all the public posturing was beginning to get boring, too. ”Well, I’m done,” he said before dessert, tossing his napkin on the table and vanishing from the room.

Palm Beach had been Ivana Trump’s idea. Long ago, Donald had screamed at her, “I want nothing social that you aspire to. If that is what makes you happy, get another husband!” But she had no intention of doing that, for Ivana, like Donald, was living out a fantasy. She had seen that in the Trump life everything and everybody appeared to come with a price, or a marker for future use. Ivana had learned to look through Donald with glazed eyes when he said to close friends, as he had in the early years of their marriage, “I would never buy Ivana any decent jewels or pictures. Why give her negotiable assets?” She had gotten out of Eastern Europe by being tough and highly disciplined, and she had compounded her skills through her husband, the master manipulator. She had learned the lingua franca in a world where everyone seemed to be using everyone else in a relentless drive for power. How was she to know that there was another way to live? Besides, she often told her friends, however cruel Donald could be, she was very much in love with him. […]

This past April, when his empire was in danger of collapse, Trump isolated himself in a small apartment on a lower floor of Trump Tower. He would lie on his bed, staring at the ceiling, talking into the night on the telephone. The Trumps had separated. Ivana remained upstairs in the family triplex with its beige onyx floors and low-ceilinged living room painted with murals in the style of Michelangelo. The murals had occasioned one of their frequent fights: Ivana wanted cherubs, Donald preferred warriors. The warriors won. “If this were on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, it would be very much in place in terms of quality,” Trump once said of the work. That April, Ivana began to tell her friends that she was worried about Donald’s state of mind.

You see where the kids get it, where Eric and Junior have learned to compare Trump properties to the Mona Lisa or the Louvre in Paris, the Pyramids and such like. It’s complete fantasy-driven madness, but that’s what they grew up with. Now this next quote will blow your mind.

Donald is a believer in the big-lie theory,” his lawyer had told me. “If you say something again and again, people will believe you.”

“One of my lawyers said that?” Trump said when I asked him about it. “I think if one of my lawyers said that, I’d like to know who it is, because I’d fire his ass. I’d like to find out who the scumbag is!”

Trump is a self-promoter and a liar. He has always exaggerated. He has always cobbled together fictions about himself. It’s amazing that he got as far as he got. But he needs to be stopped now. This has to be the end of the road.

  1. Yep. The worst it seems, the truer it is with these clowns.

And of course, listen to what they accuse others of.

WITHOUT EXCEPTION, it’s what they’ve done, are doing, or would like to do, themselves.

  2. Hitler’s propaganda guru, Goebbels is credited with that saying about repetitive lies. He manipulated rallies broadcast over the radio, planted people in the audience, etc., exactly the playbook trump’s campaign used, along with passing voter lists to the GRU,(Russian intelligence), to target those key states in the Midwest. I really don’t give a damn if people get tired of me calling them child killing NAZIS. That’s what they are, and if anyone doesn’t see that and get alarmed, then you might as well be an ostrich with your head in the sand. Right Merrick? Many Germans, who realized what was happening, and had money ran here. NOW THERE’S NO PLACE TO RUN! Time to wake up…our house us on fire!

  3. I simply don’t have words to describe my disgust for this individual, and I find it utterly appalling that so many people support him. I guess it’s the post-war generation I come from. If I had grown up in the 30’s, he would not be so surprising. Human nature has a profoundly ugly side, and this monster plumbs its depths.

  4. As Trump began laying waste to the other candidates and his campaign took off in the 2016 primaries I thought of this moment from Cabaret. At some point I wound up posting it on my FB feed and my sister was FURIOUS with me. She got downright vicious with me over making the comparison and not that we’re close and talk regularly it was a long, long time before we’d be in touch again. But Hitler sold the masses a line of bullshit and people swallowed it whole. The elites in Germany were amused, and assumed it would fade like any fad. And if not well, they could handle a populist movement easily by exposing Hitler for what he was. The world saw how that turned out.

Remember the talk for years about not worrying, the establishment would make sure there were “adults in the room” to stymie the excess of Trump and Trumpism? How has THAT worked out. Powerful as the song and the crowd in the Beer Garten’s reaction was (I loved the old man who sat there disgusted at it all) the part that really hit me despite how young I was when this came out was as the two feature characters were getting into the fancy car to leave and Michael York’s character asks his German Aristocrat host “Still think you can control them?” It haunted me then. And it began haunting me once it became clear Trump might actually get the GOP nomination.

    • That tomorrow caused approximately 70 million deaths…11 million systematically murdered in the death camps. The country reduced to rubble, which it would remain today if the allies hadn’t rebuilt it. This is a dangerous time. 76 MILLION nazi supporters voted for Trump after watching him lie, cheat, steal, and murder for FOUR YEARS! This is far far from over. Unfortunately for us. I wonder where our citizens ever got the idea we’d never have to fight to defend the free world ever again? If we get as fervent about voting we won’t have to hopefully.
From Braveheart: The nobles asked Wallace where he was going when he rode out to meet the king’s representative giving the terms of surrender. He said he was going to pick a fight. In his speech to the ragtag ‘army’, many of whom were deserting…he asked them where are you going? They said they wanted to live. He said in the end of his speech… fight and you may die…run and you’ll live. But many years from now what would you give to come back to this day and tell our enemies you may take our lives…BUT YOU WILL NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM!!!
Too many patriots lie in the ground for me to give in or give up on our democracy, as imperfect as it is. If the Maga crowd think they can destroy it…you better be willing to pay for it with everything you have. I took an oath and I will ultimately honor it even if our senators and congressional representatives don’t. Tomorrow will never belong to the nazi bastards on this ground.

      • We’re about the same age and I suspect much of your life you’ve heard “it can’t happen here.” The fact someone as unfit in every way imaginable as Trump even got a major Party nomination should have told people it WAS happening here and 62 million people voting for him in 2016 was proof it was happening here. The only thing that surprises me about reporting of goings on in the WH on Jan. 6 is that no one has claimed he was comparing pictures of the Reichstag Fire to what was happening at the Capitol! Maybe his “very fine brain” was too far gone to remember that being taught in history class when he was in school. American got the wake up call and Joe Biden won handily but what’s both infuriating and terrifying as that after four years of Trump ten million MORE American goobers voted for him than in 2016! And worse, even after Jan. 6 and even if he’s convicted the GOP might well be too terrified of MAGAs and make him the nominee again.

Given his financial woes that are about to get worse I’m startled that he hasn’t started hawking a Trump version of the Nazi “brown shirt” getup only with a gold T in place of the swastika on the armband. Maybe Ivanka won’t hook him up with one of her sweatshops overseas to mass produce them cheap but surely he can find somewhere that will. And sell his “uniforms” for enough to clear fifty bucks or more in profit. Trump could probably sell five million of them in a week and that’s two-hundred fifty million bucks right there!

Well, like you if Trump/MAGA wants to take my democracy that I too swore to defend then they’ll have to take it from my cold dead body. And like I’ve said before I’ll be going to hell in a crowd. 99.9% of the Meal Team Six MAGA goobers talk tough but in the end aren’t willing to die. If there’s a group one just has to make like the fictional Jack Reacher and take out the leader. One, maybe two others might hesitantly try and once he/they are also on the ground bleeding the rest will run away.
