It’s going to be an interesting couple of months. The delusion is running at a fever pitch and at least we’ll be rid of that after New Hampshire, probably, after South Carolina almost certainly. Clarity will be nice for a change. Nikki Haley self-immolated last week and she is responding to that with denial and delusion. She said in essence today, that the kind of gaffe which would be a career stopper in any normal world, and which is causing her considerable grief in this abnormal one, simply didn’t even register. Come on, man, as Joe Biden would say. Get a clue. And then she dug her hole even deeper and jumped in.

No, the south is not comfortable with its history. It can’t be. It’s a history of shame and disgrace for perpetuating the dehumanization of a portion of the human race. That’s a stain that will never wash clean. If Haley thinks this is a comfortable topic, she is truly out of touch. And of course she went on to prove that exact thing.

Two major points: 1. Her slavery gaffe did not go unnoticed. She is completely kidding herself if she believes that. 2. She’s not going to beat Trump. Haley’s only chance and DeSantis’ chance, is if Trump has a fatal heart attack — or even a heart attack, period. That would take him out of the race. But short of a massive health issue on Trump’s part, Haley will soon be in the rear view mirror and her donors will be looking to write checks to Trump, an eventuality that we’ve all foreseen for quite some time. And you don’t have to be Nostradamus to do so, let’s put it that way.

It was suggested recently that Chris Christie drop out of the race and endorse Haley. He declined because she’s gutless. Boy was he right. The Bulwark:

In his rebuke of Haley, Christie didn’t start with her reticence about Trump. He started with her evasive answer about the Civil War, and he connected this to other issues. “She’s unwilling to offend anyone by telling the truth,” said Christie. “She isn’t willing to say the same things about abortion in New Hampshire that she says in Iowa.” He argued that Haley’s servility to Trump—“She says he was the right president for the right time”—was part of a larger pattern.

Haley isn’t completely spineless. Like her fellow South Carolinian, Sen. Lindsey Graham, she cares about foreign policy and is willing to stick up, even in an increasingly isolationist party, for allies such as Ukraine. But there’s no issue on which Haley is braver than Christie. And on too many issues, she folds.

WHEN SUNUNU ADVISES CHRISTIE to “make a quick calculation” and bow out so that “this party comes together”—and so that Christie can continue to “have a voice in this party”—he isn’t just telling Christie to yield to Haley. He’s inviting Christie to be more like her. He’s encouraging Christie to practice the same craven self-preservation that gave Trump power over the GOP in the first place.

So far, Christie isn’t budging. In a new TV ad, he asks: “What kind of president do we want: a liar or someone who’s got the guts to tell the truth?” All the evidence I’ve seen indicates that Republican voters would rather have a liar. But it’s better to lose to that candidate than to be her.

And you knew this was coming. I wish we could fast forward through all the play acting of the next few months. We already know how the story ends. Trump leads the GOP for yet the third lunge at the presidency. Meantime, many millions of dollars in ad money will be spent in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

She’s a poser, she desperately wants to be liked, but

    on the big stage
    obvious is painful 😭

  2. She is a liar, a racist, and she supports a nazi traitor. FACT! I was born and raised in NC, and although most white people were poor and didn’t own slaves, south carolina was a state with many slaves due to the agricultural need for free labor. She is an apologist for an EVIL INSTITUTION that kidnapped, raped, tortured, and killed black people. No one who has any humanity can say our ancestors were doing anything that could be justified. Only those that fought for the union, and there were some, can claim some type of honor. She is vile and people need to STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR HER!

    • Although not (nearly) enough some tried to atone back then. Just as people (including me given some of the jokes and language I sometimes spoke as a kid) have tried to do so. Given you’re a product of NC and we live so close together we really should talk sometime. I could tell you all about the man who was in command of the Union Troops outside Raleigh when Lee surrendered to Grant. While many wanted to come in and sack Raleigh they weren’t about to cross General John “Black Jack” Logan. Logan was once the favored son of my hometown and from one of the region’s (southern Illinois) most well off, respected families. There were divisions in the family over slavery but pre-war Logan was not only a racist who was fine with slavery continuing, he even as a legislator sponsored an awful bill permitting racism. But he changed, both because of his passsion for preserving the Union but being exposed to so much more than “free” southern Illinois had shown him. Not to mention his friendship with Grant. He became full-on abolitionist and, as I said spent the rest of his life atoning. The statue of him still stands back in my hometown but thankfully he’s not buried there. Nor these days (it’s true Trump now) would he want to be. He’s buried at the Soldiers and Sailors Cemetery in DC where his remains rest in honor and can be honored.

Are you serious? Do you REALLY believe what you wrote? I mean, considering we actually have MAGAts (and some not-MAGA-crazy-but-close-enough GOPers) who have suggested Trump could be President while *IN* prison, do you think Trump’s faithful would abandon him simply because he was bedridden and recovering from a heart attack?

Sorry if the above came off rude but, really, the MAGAts are out there, not the least bit concerned about all the indictments (they’ve drunk the Kool-Aid and believe it’s all a conspiracy to keep Trump out of the White House), and ready to vote for Trump. All they’d do is point out that FDR was in a wheelchair and Eisenhower had a heart attack in office and no one was all that bothered.
