Kevin McCarthy has a lottt of enemies. I mean a lot. Matt Gaetz is one of them. Gaetz went on Lou Dobbs’ show on Thursday and said that he was one of five Republicans who would oppose McCarthy.

McCarthy can’t take five opponents. The maximum he can take is four or he is in deep doo doo.

Either Gaetz is blowing smoke or this is really what’s going to happen and I say swell. Bring it on, Matt. Because the more delay there is in getting a Speaker set up, the more delay and inefficiency there will be on the part of this new House, which to all appearances is going to be the most bonkers, bat$hit iteration of the lower chamber of Congress, in our history.

Here’s the scoop on where McCarthy actually stands. Punchbowl News:

The reality right now is pretty tough for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. He has four Republicans who are publicly vowing to vote against him. Under most scenarios, he could only afford to lose four Republicans and still become speaker of the House on Jan. 3.

But we’ve frequently said that McCarthy has a lot of levers he can pull in his bid to become the next speaker. McCarthy has favors to dole out, rules to change and ways to make even his staunchest critics happy.

He also can bend the processes of the House Republican Conference to his will.

Here’s an example of McCarthy doing just that.

News: The California Republican is leaning toward pushing the election of contested committee chairs until January. This is part of his effort to tread lightly inside the House Republican Conference before the speaker vote on Jan. 3. […]

We’re also flagging this for you: There now appear to be at least four hard “no” votes against McCarthy on the floor. We knew about Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Bob Good (R-Va.). Gaetz’s distaste for McCarthy has no bounds. Good – a former county supervisor and Liberty University official – got support from the McCarthy political operation when he first came to Congress. But Good has expressed to some that he was peeved it took McCarthy weeks to call him following that victory.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) has announced he’ll challenge McCarthy for speaker on the floor.

And on Tuesday, Montana Rep. Matt Rosendale published an op-ed in the Billings Gazette that all but said he would never vote for McCarthy.

So who’s the fifth? Marge Greene has said she would support McCarthy. Would she renege on that and go along with her BFF Matt Gaetz? I would consider that a distinct possibility. Also, Lauren Boebert may be persuaded, unless she’s trying to clean up her act and appear like a normal congressmember, and so far there’s been no indication of that. Gym Jordan, maybe?

Or, here’s an insane possibility but it might actually be true: Maybe Marge Greene is the linchpin. Maybe this is all a ploy on Gaetz’ part to get Marge not only on the House Oversight Committee but put her in charge of it. Yes, it’s nuts, I know. But look at who we are dealing with here, and tell me what is too far fetched to be ruled out. Because I say these people have no boundaries and McCarthy has no scruples, so it’s a recipe for disaster anyway you cut it. Chaos, at the very least.

This is worth paying close attention to. The rats are in the burlap bag and eating each other.

  1. Is gaetz that stupid? I mean, he is colossally stupid but putting Marjie Kooky Pants in charge of anything more than tying her own shoes transcends colossal.

Kevin McCarthy has been anything but careful.
