We’re on the eve of the third anniversary of the Capitol Riot, when our nation’s capitol was ransacked and pillaged by MAGA worshippers of Donald Trump. Trump now depicts the insurrectionists as “hostages” and/or “political prisoners,” as many of them serve time for their illegal actions and many others’ cases are being adjudicated through the legal system. January 6, 2021 was one of the darkest days in our history. Probably the darkest day preceding it was December 7, 1941, when the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
Both were horrific days but the key difference is that in 1941 America was attacked by a foreign adversary and in 2021 America was attacked by misguided and misinformed followers of a charismatic cult leader, who could not handle the simple reality that he had been voted out of office. He refused to leave and he, and a frequently inebriated Rudy Giuliani, cobbled together the worst conspiracy theory to date in American history, that the 2020 election was stolen. To this day, it’s appalling the number of people who believe that. And then there was the other conspiracy theory that Trump loved so well, that of Paul Pelosi’s purported gay lover. President Joe Biden wasn’t having any of it today.
This is Biden‘s best speech of his life. He is exactly on target.

Trump is going to lose his mind.
And step right into the trap that's been set.
He's going to talk about 2020 non-stop.
(I know, he was going to probably do it anyway but this locks it in.)

That’s what people see happening next, Trump going banana bonkers batshit and talking about 2020, and quintupling down, over and over, on how the election was stolen. That’s the sick old nag of a horse that Trump insists upon riding, the pale horse which is his political death, but he won’t put the poor hag out to pasture.
When Trump lost the election in 2020 many Republicans said that it was time to focus on the future. Trump can’t. He has to twist the past into an ego-salving narrative that denies plain truth and by so doing he’s taking himself and the GOP down. He either can’t see that or he just doesn’t care.

This speech was personal to President Biden. You could tell it in his tone and his words. You could also tell it in a couple of other less obvious ways.
Today, the President wore his Beau Biden Foundation tie, and directly after the speech, the song "A Sky Full of Stars" by Cold… pic.twitter.com/3DCCqRV7jT

The tweet ends, “Play was played. This song was one of Beau’s favorites and was played at his funeral. Beau was a patriot in every sense of the word and today he is smiling down, proud of the speech his dad just gave in defense of democracy in America.” New York Times:
“We must be clear,” Mr. Biden said. “Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot.”
The harshness of Mr. Biden’s attack on his rival illustrated both what his campaign believes to be the stakes of the 2024 election and his perilous political standing. Confronted with low approval ratings, bad head-to-head polls against Mr. Trump, worries about his age and lingering unease with the economy, Mr. Biden is turning increasingly to the figure who has proved to be Democrats’ single best motivator.
The speech carried echoes of the 2020 campaign, when Mr. Biden presented himself as the caretaker of “the soul of America” against a Trump candidacy that he and Democratic supporters argued was on the verge of causing permanent damage to the country.
The 31-minute speech was Mr. Biden’s first public campaign event since he announced in April that he would seek re-election and was, in tone and content, arguably his most forceful public denunciation of Mr. Trump since the two men became political rivals in 2019.
Mr. Biden’s appearance, meant as a kickoff to help define the 2024 campaign, was an early effort to revive the politically sprawling anti-Trump coalition that propelled Democrats to key victories in recent elections. Mr. Biden’s task now is to persuade those voters to view the 2024 contest as the same kind of national emergency that they did in 2018, 2020 and 2022.
We’re still in a state of national emergency and will be until the GOP can put Donald Trump in its rear view mirror. Or, until another conservative party arises from the ashes of the MAGA-broken Republican party.
As promised, it’s going to be a wild year and it’s only five days old. Here is Biden’s full speech, 32 minutes long, if you care to listen to it.
FULL SPEECH: President Joe Biden delivers his most powerful speech yet in defense of American democracy and calls out Trump's threats to the nation on the eve of the 3rd anniversary of the January 6 attack.
