Today is Australia Day, and because it falls on a Sunday this year, the Furkids were keen to celebrate it with their Aussie Furkid furriends.
Australia has a very high percentage of unique native species. Estimates suggest that around 87% of mammals, 93% of reptiles, 94% of frogs, and a significant percentage of bird species are found nowhere else on the planet. This is because Australia was isolated from all other land masses for about 30 million years. Caught on an island continent adrift between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, animals in Australia evolved in isolation from the rest of the world.
Together the Furkids and I composed this yarn about Aussie wildlife in the style of the popular bush ballad Waltzing Matilda. For those who may not be familiar with some of the lingo, the Furkids devised this glossary.

Furkids love the frothy milk at ko-fi.com/furkids. They want you to know they love licking up their frothy moustaches. You can treat them to their favourite frothies for $3/€3/£3. All proceeds go towards Loula’s healthcare with our heartfelt gratitude to all contributors.

🦘🦘 I’m celebrating Australia Day with the furkids because they are so cute and happy every day!!* I especially love finding out how cute a Tasmanian devil is!! 😚🥰
* The cute furkids are happily unaware of the politics and culture wars of Australia Day which is Invasion Day to Indigenous Peoples. The same controversies as Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day in the US. People who lived there were not consulted when the European “settlers” arrived.🤬
I’m very firmly in the camp of change-the-frickin’-date-of-Australia-Day! in deference to our First Nation people. Jan 26 was the worst date to pick. Sometime in November would be suitable weather-wise and that seems to me to be a better consideration than any human activity. We could rename it Australia Togetherness Day when all Australians unite to celebrate this wonderful land we call home.
You’re right that the Furkids have no interest whatsoever in the actual date. They’ll take any excuse for a party to have fun with furriends!
