I was reminded of this song while chatting with friends about various sleep issues we’d been having over the past couple of weeks. We were all in need of a friendly Mr Sandman! The furkids – who never seem to have any trouble sleeping – reminded me we had an appropriate song in our 2025 queue already, and this week would be a good time to put the finishing touches to it.
It dates back to late 1954 when it was made famous by an all-female group called The Chordettes. The original members – Janet Buschmann, Alice Mae Buschmann, Dorothy “Dottie” Schwartz and Jinny Osborn – initially sang folk music, but then changed to the harmonising style known as barbershop quartet or close harmony. “Mr Sandman” was their first single and a breakout hit. It spent 7 weeks at #1 and sold over a million copies.
