I’ve tried to tell our beloved Furkids that “US” actually stands for “United States”, but they look at me as though that’s just preposterous. In their words, “It’s about us, and you can’t take it away from us!” Of course it’s about them. This is their column after all.
“Besides,” they continue, “while America’s Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776, it wasn’t signed until August 2nd. So the country’s actual birth date was August 2nd, 1776.” Then cheekily add, “It was just in labor for 4 weeks!” before falling all over themselves in a cacophony of laughter. If you haven’t heard this joke before, I assure you that your cats, dogs, fish, birds, bunnies, horses and hamsters all know it, and they think it’s hilarious!
Because there’s a lot of partying around July 4th, they decided to adopt it as one of the dates to celebrate their own independence. They’re more than happy to share the occasion with America.

Thank you to everyone who bought the Furkids a frothy Kofi this week. All proceeds from ko-fi.com/furkids go towards Loula’s health and well-being. We’re saving up for her next vet visit – a thorough dental clean under anaesthetic. In the meantime, Loula sends everyone loads of purrs, snuggles and kitty kisses.
