I remember this song from my childhood. I don’t think I ever knew all the words, just enough to sing-and-hum along to the jaunty tune. It’s a purrfect song for many of the furkid fambly because it’s all about doing your own thing without ever worrying what anyone else says or thinks. Many hoomins wish they could effect this attitude with the same carefree joie de vivre and nonchalance as their furkids so effortlessly achieve.

Loula is 100% in the zone of this song. She may not be able to snap her fingers but she has very effective verbal means of letting me know when and what she wants her devoted servant to do for her. For the present, she requires only that I quietly pass her by while she snoozes on an armchair in the lounge room.

There are other reasons why furkids may want you to pass them by. Some are in Greta Garbo mode and just want to be left alone. Others, like the coast guard cat in our header image, are on duty. Then there are furkids who want you to pass them by because they’re hiding. You’ll see all of these examples in the illustrated lyrics.

A number of singers have recorded this song but the team’s favourite is this version by the delightful Peggy Lee. The jukebox is primed and ready to go so just press play, scroll over the illustrated lyrics and sing along!

  1. {{{Michelle}}} – I definitely remember the tune but I’m not sure I *ever* heard the words before. At least not the verse. Definitely an energetic little ditty. And a cheerful addition to my Sunday. Thank you and the Furkids. Skritches to Ms. Loula. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • I just noticed that I had a panel out of order arrrrggggghhh! But all fixed now so it will make more sense.

      I remember the first two lines of the verse and all the chorus but nothing in-between. I don’t think I could make out what the words were. That might’ve been because they’re oddly phrased.

      Now it’s heating up, Loula is in search of all the coolest spots around the house. If I go for an afternoon snooze I take her with me because I’ll have the aircon and ceiling fan going in my room so it’s lovely and cool. She can stretch out on her back and let the ceiling fan waft cool air over her tummy!

      Moar hugs to you my dear friend and scritches to Charlie, Cloud, Freddie, Bobbie, Murf and Rennie. ? ? ?

      • I don’t know if it was that I couldn’t understand them or they just didn’t stick with me. Or possibly that I heard it mostly as a marching band tune.

        I hope Loula and you have a nice cool nap together then. moar {{{HUGS}}} & skritches, as appropriate, back.

  2. What fun, Mopshell!!! I don’t think I’ve ever heard that song, but I love it. And your (and the Furkids’) take on it is sublime. I laughed out loud so many times at how particular photos matched the words. You are an artiste who just keeps getting better and better … and blowing us all away with your talents!

    • Isn’t that a brilliant pic! I forget where I found it but laughed when I saw it and added it to my burgeoning files because I knew I’d use it one day!

  3. I don’t remember ever hearing that song but you made it so right with the furkiddos. Peggy Lee was a bit before my listening time but I do remember hearing her on the radio. Thanks for another uplifting part of my Sunday. Much better than some of the NFL scores.

    • There’s a special kind of pleasure in introducing peeps to a new song that they find they enjoy. it’s a way of spreading the musical love and making weekends just a little bit better. ? ? ?

  4. I think we didn’t remember the words because they’re from the late 1940s, early 1950s. We probably heard it on the radio so no lip reading or captions.

    • I thought it dated back to the late 1950s but when I looked it up, I discovered it was written in 1964 as the theme song for the Cary Grant film, “Father Goose”. However, it didn’t rocket up the charts until Peggy Lee released her version of the song the following year. This explains how I knew it – I would’ve heard it on the radio.
