There is no low they won’t go. News of Donald Trump’s $83.3 million judgment broke Friday and it’s got people howling from sea to shining sea — not just on this continent but the other six. (Although, admittedly, I’m not able to find a lot of commentary from Antarctica, but let’s be patient.)

Trump is desperately doing his usual mantra “election interference” and “witch hunt” but now he’s decided to throw a soupcon of both-siderism into the stew, to give it a tang. And look at who he dug up.

What’s that you say? The New York Times reported last year that Joe Biden’s accuser had moved to Russia “and was seeking citizenship there, according to Sputnik, a Russian-government-run news site.”

Who are we to question the veracity of Sputnik?

Ms. Reade told Sputnik in a news conference that while her “dream is to live” in both the United States and Russia, she might reside only in Russia because that is where she feels “surrounded by protection and safety.”

In 2019, Ms. Reade, who briefly worked as a staff assistant in Mr. Biden’s Senate office in 1993, accused him of inappropriately touching her. Then in 2020, around the time when he appeared likely to win the Democratic nomination for president, she accused him of sexual assaultMr. Biden flatly denied her allegations.

And no, I don’t know if the tweet is legitimate. What I do know is that it’s pathetic, but then consider the source. The argument is that Joe Biden should pay Tara Reade $83 million and I’m sure that she’d be willing to collect a fraction of that if Trump could arrange for it somehow. The argument is also Reade was debunked and in Trump’s “mind” this means Carroll should have been as well. This is the desperate flailing of a fish out of water before it finally stops moving.

It doesn’t surprise me if Tara Reade has joined Trump’s cult, if this is on the up and up. And it doesn’t matter either way. The “news story” is that Trump is trying to diminish his own egregious actions by resurrecting a debunked conspiracy theory about Joe Biden.

Don’t expect it to stop here. It won’t. Trump is just getting started.

Even Mitt Romney said the other day that he was surprised that Trump had been civilly adjudicated a rapist and it “doesn’t move the needle.” Romney burst into flames the day he made the crack about 47% of America being on some form of government assistance and considering themselves victims. I join him in marveling how a statement hung one man and being a rapist seems to bounce off another. I don’t understand today’s electorate, either.

Mark your calendars. Wednesday is the 31st of January. Judge Arthur Engoron is supposed to render his verdict on damages. It could be the $370 million that Letitia James asked for or it could be some other figure. The odds of it being anything Trump will be happy with are non existent.
