Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger is the new bipartisan darling after proclaiming on one of the Sunday shows that the GOP is afraid to “confront” Trump with his lies, simply because they’re “scared to death” of him. The idea that the Republican party, given its druthers, would druther stand on principle and tell the truth but they’re simply a “House of Cowards” as one Liz Cheney ally put it, has been picking up speed. In his column today, Greg Sargent of the Washington Post debunks this myth and makes it clear, the GOP is endorsing the Big Lie, because it’s to their advantage to do so, not simply in order to dodge the wrath of Trump.
Take the shenanigans in Arizona, where GOP state legislators have commissioned a recount of ballots in Maricopa County. It is being conducted by a firm whose chief executive has promoted nonsense about fraud in the 2020 election.
What’s more, the GOP-controlled county board of election supervisors has blasted the recount while vouching for the election’s integrity. Even one Republican supporter of the recount has now denounced it as “ridiculous” and “embarrassing.”
Given all this, it’s impossible to chalk this effort up to “cowardice” or “fear of Trump.” It is a deliberate action plainly undertaken to manufacture fake evidence for the affirmative purpose of further undermining faith in our electoral system going forward.
Stefanik has endorsed this effort. Oozing with phony piety, she claims she merely wants “answers” for Americans concerned about “election security.” Of course, the opposite is true: Stefanik is trying to undermine, not reinforce, voter confidence in our electoral outcomes.
This is not the act of a “coward” who “fears Trump” and would vouch for the integrity of the election if only she could do so without consequences.
Stefanik has gone from moderate to MAGA in a very short while and if she actually ascends to GOP leadership on Wednesday, it will be after endorsing the Big Lie openly and talking about Hunter Biden’s laptop on Steve Bannon’s podcast. While Stefanik may have been the bright young hope of the GOP several years back, one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Best, she’s turned to the Dark Side now.
And then there’s Jim Banks.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), the chair of the Republican Study Committee, made an extraordinarily disingenuous appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” Banks had endorsed the Texas lawsuit, which would have invalidated millions of votes in four states based on fictions, and voted to overturn President Biden’s electors in Congress.
Pressed by Fox’s Chris Wallace to admit Biden won “fair and square,” Banks kinda sorta acknowledged it, but immediately pivoted to claiming those actions were entirely justified, by insisting that his “serious concerns” about the election were still valid.
This is not the act of a “coward” who “fears Trump,” and would vouch for the integrity of the election if only he could do so without consequences.
Rather, it is the act of someone who is fully devoted to the project of continuing to undermine confidence in our elections going forward.
This is for purely instrumental purposes. Republicans are employing their own invented doubts about 2020 to justify intensified voter suppression everywhere. Banks neatly crystallized the point on Fox, saying those doubts required more voting restrictions — after reinforcing them himself.
Republicans love the Big Lie. It gives them something to get their backs up against and justify gerrymandering, voter suppression, ridiculous laws saying you can’t bring water to someone in a voting line, or others shutting down drop boxes and curtailing voting hours. They love this. This is who they are and how they’re going to maintain the power of the minority. That doing so threatens democratic stability is of no consequence. They blow that off.
The radicalized GOP is a very dangerous beast. And it’s not because they’re afraid of the Mango Monarch. The Big Lie is now a part of GOP dogma. Each and every one of them knows it’s false. But they don’t care. If it will bring them money and power, they’re just fine with it. It’s true that politicians always lie, but in this day and age Republican politicians build alternate realities out of whole cloth. And that’s something else altogether. that’s disingenuity on a Satanic scale
It’s true that Trump added a whole new dimension to their falsehoods and of course, they have assimilated it into their body politic. They are the Borg of politics.
There is no both sides! You are either for this republic or the traitors who betrayed it!
#ABC #NBC #MSNBC #CBS all make our lives worse. They all pander to republicans and help spread their lies! Regardless who wins they constantly give republicans the loudest voice. I will never forgive republican’s treason and I do not understand how any true American could!
They tried to overthrow our country for a dictator responsible for a half million American deaths! Refuse to recognize or not that is the truth!
It was always their duty to hold him to account in his duty to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and to faithfully execute the laws passed by congress. It was always their duty to convict and remove him each time he was impeached.

This took a long time to read, and I couldn’t help noticing a few things. Passion in expressing strongly held beliefs is a good thing. At the same time, repeating yourself as you did and on some important matters can and does cause people to give up. I hope you take my criticism in the spirit it’s intended because those familiar with my own writing have, numerous times in the past and especially on another site where I got my start in political commentary indicated I went on for too long and diffused the impact of what I was saying. I shudder at the number of comments that said (more or less) “I stopped reading” and not all were polite about it. Some topics require a lengthy description of the various factors in play, and in such cases are often better broken up into individual pieces and posted separately. Also, while repeating one’s self if fine to make a point, one should limit the number of times they do so and the “repeats” should be shorter than the original version of a statement/thought. I still sometimes run on too long and lose a reader(s) but I’ve tried to take to heart those who pointed out to me what I’ve pointed out to you. So, I respectfully suggest that when you’ve written a great deal as you did here, that you go back and look at how to shorten it. Trust me when I tell you far more people will pay attention to what you have to say if you keep it as short as possible.

It can be both, Ursula. As I said a few days back, your Liz Cheneys, your Mitt Romneys and Mitch McConnell do indeed share the ostensible goals of the Trump cult. They just want it under new and more competent management which Mango Mussolini refuses to allow for a variety of reasons, NONE of them good.
But staking yourself to a constituency that they can’t even be honest with themselves about, be it their actual numbers or their repulsive effect on the voters they need to stay relevant? That IS cowardly and political malpractice to boot. Being more afraid of this crowd’s guns than willing to do the hard work of becoming more in tune with this century can hardly be called anything else.
Let’s not forget that a group of them spent the 4th of July in Moscow a couple of years ago. I am convinced that many of them are beholden to Russian and Russian money and will do whatever bidding is asked, that their motives are not specifically tied to Trump.
