We all know that Hunter Biden had absolutely no business being on the board of Burrisma, a “private holdings” energy company that fed off the then corrupt Ukrainian government (that had ties to Russian Oligarchs). It was legal, but unethical as hell. Despite Hunter being a Yale law grad, he had nothing to offer Burisma except access to his father. Ironically, when then Vice President Joe Biden went to Ukraine, he fought the corrupt government, thereby going against Burisma and Hunter’s interests, something overlooked by the Right in their never-ending pursuit of Hunter. Now, it appears that Donald Trump Jr. has a similar problem, except Junior’s issue involves a college friend who is apparently trading on access to Junior, which, because of the corrupt nature of the Trump administration, sort of implies access to Trump himself.

It is hard to think of a more deserving guy than Junior. According to the Wall Street Journal, Junior’s friend Gentry Beach has been traveling in Africa, looking for good mining opportunities, and implying that he had Don Jr.’s ear. And you know what that means. Per a report in the Journal, but relayed by Rawstory:

“The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo sat with a veteran U.S. diplomat recently in a hillside villa overlooking Kinshasa to resolve a question that had been troubling him. A Texas investor named Gentry Beach was regularly touring Central Africa, trying to purchase mining concessions as part of an ‘economic diplomacy’ campaign he credited to President Trump.

Beach had let it be known he was friends with Donald Trump Jr., showing what senior Congolese officials described as text messages with the U.S. president’s eldest son, and their photos together.

Did he speak for the Trump administration?” the report states. “Thousands of miles away, Pakistan’s government had been asking the same question… Beach had traveled to Islamabad to meet with the prime minister, promising to invest billions of dollars mining critical minerals and building what he told reporters would be ‘some of the most high-end luxury properties that have ever existed’ in the South Asian country. ‘I’ve been very close with the Trump administration for a long time,’ he added.”

Yes, we all know what “Very close” is supposed to mean in this context, and never more so than when it has been clear that the Trump administration is more than “open for business.” Still, having a college buddy out trading on the Trump name has made Junior nervous, implying that perhaps he isn’t so close to this operation, or at least that he wants it done more discreetly.

“Trump Jr., who declined to comment, has privately told people he is frustrated with his old friend. While abroad, Trump Jr. has found himself fending off foreign officials who told him they had heard from Beach that the president’s son was interested in doing business in their countries… Trump Jr. rejected the inquiries and said he wasn’t doing business with Beach... In August, Trump Jr.’s lawyer sent a cease-and-desist letter to Beach to stop representing himself as a business partner of Trump Jr. Beach denied ever receiving or seeing the letter.”

One of them is lying, and it is hard to imagine how Beach would lie about never receiving such a letter. If he had, it means that he could face trouble with the very people whom he counts as friends to help start these relationships. Please note and think hard about this; it is just as likely that Junior’s people are lying when they say that they sent the cease and desist letter. They may be trying to end prying questions and covering their backs.

We cannot know.

One last quote, it notes that Don Junior has done nothing to distance himself from Beach and that might be because he cannot afford to. It sounds as though the two have a mutually assured destruction pact:

Beach smiled: ‘Don has laughingly said many times that we’ve known each other so long, any information we have is mutually destructive,’ he said,” the report states. “‘He knows that I’ll always be a loyal friend.'”

It is pretty hard not to translate that as Beach saying; “Come too hard at me and I will destroy you.” After all, it is nearly impossible for Junior to ruin Beach’s life (Short of arrest, which in this administration is not too crazy). It sounds as though anything that might befall Beach will certainly land with a much greater thud on the guy who still aspires to power and is already a bit of an “access powerbroker.”

This might be one worth watching. The thing about monetizing the presidency is that it takes a ton of foot soldiers to really get it done. Direct checks to “Mr. Donald J. Trump” don’t look so good. But partnerships around the world with Don’s kids running the Trump Organization might work just as well. But then there are the snags, the wildcards, the guys that aren’t quite as discreet and sophisticated as Jared Kushner.

Meanwhile, Beach is out trampling the bush in Africa and Southeast Asia, making deals that may come back to haunt Don Jr. He sounds nervous, maybe not so much about the deals but what might get out if the deals aren’t made. A lot of weird things happen in college.

  1. Yes, given his father was Vice President the ethics of Hunter Biden following a business partner to sit on the Board of Burisma was stupid. However I disagree he was unqualified. Hunter had more than just a law degree. He had varied experience in the government (Baby Bush appointed him to the board of Amtrak – he was VP in fact), non-profit and the business sector from hedge fund ownership to consulting. He had extensive international experience. Again, the offer to do business with Burisma was stupid and he should have realized his fee was due to his dad’s position. But his credentials absent that connection would still have gotten him a heft payment.

Compared to Hunter Biden’s education and career Don Jr. isn’t jack shit.
