Well, Melania Trump is two for two when it comes to making inappropriate fashions statements at Carter family funerals. First we had her coat at Rosalyn Carter’s funeral. Instead of dark/black coat like the other ladies “Melanie” just HAD to stand out and wore grey. Because like her hubby she’s a self-centered attention seeking a-hole. So I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that today, sans coat she attended Jimmy Carter’s funeral with her hubby. (How much did THAT appearance cost Trumpty?) Seeing her from a distance even that funky big white collar jumped out. No, Melania just couldn’t bear to be classy and wear a simple black dress. SHE had to make a “fashion” statement. Something nagged at me for a while though and finally the light bulb came on. As in the question posed in the title. Was Melania actually trying to TROLL the iconic Ruth Bader Ginsburg by wearing a “Dissent Collar” as in expressing her distaste for having to be at the National Cathedral today?
Now, according to this piece from The Mercury News the classless soon to be again First (not really) Lady was just expressing a dash of fashion. Regarding what they described as an eye-catching fashion statement they added this:
The bright-white, Peter Pan-style collar on Melania Trump’s black Valentino trench coat stood out, as she sat at the far end of the second row with her husband, Donald Trump, amid a sea of somber, black attire donned by the other presidential and vice presidential VIPs and their partners.
It also was immediately apparent Melania Trump’s collar featured a dramatic black and white print. Women’s Wear Daily jumped in to explain that the print depicts a couple in a passionate embrace and surrounded by roses and butterflies.
Maybe that’s all this was. Just a WILDLY inappropriate time and place to be playing ‘Look at meeeeeee, and my fashion sense’ games. Then again, while Melania doesn’t have anywhere near the education and smarts she and her enablers want everyone to believe she’s actually got she’s smarter than her husband. Not that THAT says much but sometimes she probably reads, or skims through articles (like about RBG when she died?) and remembers stuff that people tell her. If she happens to be paying attention for some reason.
What IF Melania knew about Ginsburg and her famous “Dissent Collars?” When RBG planned to read a particular scathing dissent when SCOTUS ruled on a case she’d wear a sort of Peter Pan style white or light collar over her robe. Everyone knew when she walked out that way there were going to be fireworks. So maybe “Melanie’ learned about that during the mourning period for and burial of Ginsburg. And also that it was none other than Jimmy Carter who first appointed her to the federal bench.
Yeah, I for one think if Melania knew either or both of those things then hell yes she tried to troll RBG with that tacky outfit. And it WAS tacky. “Bigly.” I can just hear Trump seeing it in the limo on the drive to the National Cathedral and asking “What the HELL is that you’re wearing?” And enjoying a response along the lines of:
I not vunt to be do-eeing theese any more than you. But that Jeemy Carter was who got that Geensburg voman a federal judge. And led to her bee-ing Supreme Court. I dee-sent having to do thees today and I dee-side to insult both Carter and Geeenburg!”
That’s all too easy to believe. Hell, it would have been the only part of the day Trumpy enjoyed. Whether it was just a classless and ugly attempt at a fashion statement or an attempted trolling (or both?) we might never know. Then again I’m betting the incoming Trump White House will leak like a sieve. Especially if the Democrats retake one or both chambers of Congress and round two of investigations into stuff like ‘Where did all that money raised for the Inaugural go?’ Like Trump Melania will have staffers she ignores like furniture, but low level staffers aren’t furniture. Neither are higher ups who find themselves caught up in financial shenanigans. So maybe in a couple of years we’ll find out one way or the other.
In the meantime I can’t help but be appalled. It was bad enough that Trump decided to foul Carter’s send-off by showing up. Melania made it even worse. And I know this: A single toenail clipping of Ruth Bader Ginsburg was filled with more class and smarts and STYLE than Melania Trump could ever have in her wildest delusions of grandeur.

Anyone ever visit any of the seedy areas of any of our cities where the ladies of the night practice the world’s oldest profession? They have many wonderful qualities and skills, but they aren’t known for fashion, even the really expensive ones. She’s not there because of her fashion. She’s there because, for a large sum, she allowed a hog to root in her pigpen. I don’t fault her expressions. Who could come away from that experience without some regret? I’m just surprised she didn’t wear a veil to hide her face. What a brave woman!!!!
