The fall of the Donald Empire is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. It just keeps falling apart and it’s painful anticipating the next fracture. Ron DeSantis is a steadfast Trump loyalist. It’s even been rumored that Trump might put DeSantis in the number two spot on the 2024 ticket. But today, DeSantis and Trump are not seeing eye to eye at all. Trump is scheduled to appear at a rally in Florida this weekend not far from the condo collapse and DeSantis is begging him to not come. So far Trump is shining DeSantis on. Washington Examiner:
Former President Donald Trump is rejecting pleas from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to postpone a campaign-style rally this weekend some 200 miles from the Miami suburb where an international search-and-rescue mission is excavating bodies from the site of a collapsed seaside condominium.
DeSantis’s office has “made a direct plea” to the former president’s team, calling on it to postpone the Saturday event in Sarasota. One Florida Republican bluntly said Trump and his team need to “read the room.”
“The governor is getting tested here as to how far he’s going to be pushed before he breaks ranks with President Trump. And he has to be very careful because this is Trump country,” this source said. “The base loves the president. But they equally love Ron. It’s a showdown going on right now.”
For now, the Trump camp is holding firm. “Nobody wants to cancel,” a source close to Trump told the Washington Examiner
Of course Trump doesn’t want to cancel. He just got canceled in Mobile, Alabama for the 4th. If he’s canceled in Florida on the third, then he’s nowhere this July 4th weekend and that’s unacceptable to him. He’s got to have a venue on the biggest patriotic weekend of the entire year. It’s all about him, not a bunch of dead people, remember?
Trump has an aide named Susie Wiles running the show and his failure to politely stand down under the circumstances has been blamed on the fact that Wiles and DeSantis don’t get along.
An operative suggested the bad blood between Wiles and DeSantis was clouding the decision to keep the rally on schedule, a source said. “Because Ron DeSantis doesn’t want it, she’s gonna make sure it happens,” this source said. “The governor supports the president, but something awful just happened in his state.”
This person added: “We can walk and chew gum at the same time. But right now, there’s a Kumbaya moment. People need this. We need everybody to come together, we need to see that to start healing this country. And we saw a little bit of that today for the first time in five years. Today was the first day that people were like, ‘Maybe there’s hope that our country can come back together again.’ Only for, on Saturday, the former president tearing the Band-Aid off: He’s gonna go for the jugular.”
The Kumbaya moment is doubtlessly referring to the visit by Joe and Jill Biden. Biden’s strong suit is empathy, a quality of which Trump has none.
There are 150 people missing right now after the condo collapse. That’s a lot of people assuming they are all eventually found to be dead. But you think Mr. Empathy cares? Did he care about 600,000 Americans dead from COVID? No, he cares only that he lost the election due to the pandemic. Screw the dead. This is exactly the same thing.
Response teams from Israel and Mexico are aiding the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s rescue efforts. And Florida Republican and Democratic elected officials have been a constant presence at the site.
“We’re talking about 150 people that are missing,” this former aide said. “There’s massive loss of life. People are grieving. There’s a lot of confusion as to what other buildings might be affected. Right now, the governor is down there almost every single day. What, you’re gonna go across and do a rally and beat up Democrats? It’s tone-deaf.”
Tone deaf to say the least. Sociopathic is more like it. But we are talking about Donald Trump, never forget.
He who shall not be named is a Psychopathic Malignant Narcissist. In his world, no one but him matters, nothing matters except as it affects him. He does not care that he is directly responsible for more than 400,000 of the more than 600,000 Covid deaths in this country. He only cares whether he can get his next attention fix. He has to be the center of attention, it is like oxygen to him. That is why he needs to be ignored completely, so that his name is never again mentioned on TV, radio, in print and on the Internet!!
Nonya, in a perfect world, none of us would have ever known a guy like tRump or any other dictator-wannabes! They would not exist.
I’m glad Trump is going through with the rally, not that anyone could stop him. As you note, he’s completely self-obsessed. I’m glad because it will be bad for DeSantis and it’s long past time that something went badly wrong for him.
Those grieving will not forget Trump’s selfishness and gross disrespect either.

All this demonstrates something I learned long ago: the end of a big thing is never due to any one thing. It’s a steady drip, drip of cascading failures that ultimately culminates into rot and collapse. No matter how this ultimately plays out, everyone involved in this mess will lose.
I thought I couldn’t be surprised by much of anything at this point–we’ve endured almost six years of wingnuttery and tone-deafness from almost the entire Republican Party and its leaders. But this one? Holy cow–a vituperative revenge rally only 200 miles away from the building collapse and its ongoing rescue, but likely soon to be a recovery effort.
The only good thing about it? The worse the optics become, the more people this guy and his minions turn off, or at the very least, cause them to rethink whether they want this kind of Republican Party. And those who walked away the other day in Ohio because they were displeased by his same-old, same-old and in the words of more than a few of them, rhetoric that wasn’t nuts enough, well, let’s see what he comes up with this coming weekend to lose more folks on both sides of this odd political calculation.
I bet the former guy is also unhappy that DeSantis got better polling than he did.
