Time is a funny thing. As the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Yet time also has a way of dragging. If there’s a saying about it dragging out during bad times I don’t know it but I suppose someone might chime in with a comment. A comedian who’s name I can’t remember said of his hometown of Gladys, Virginia if told you have six months to live move there – because every day is a f**king eternity! I also know both as an athlete and in a few of the times when by all rights I should have wound up dead time can slow way down. But thinking about your own lives I’m sure you can think of examples of time flying by and sometimes dragging out.
Those endless summer days are, now that we’re in September noticeably shorter. But I really do think for Donald Trump, who is increasingly under a spotlight with the intensity of the sun the days are growing longer. Much longer. And reaching the point where their torment is such the days will never seem to end. Each weekend brings some news blurbs that basically say “Trump had a bad week.” Each week the weeks for Trump seem to get worse. In this past week alone, just to mention a few things:
We already knew that “Employee #4” in his FL National Security case ditched his Trump paid attorney for an independent one that would only work on his (Yuscil Tavera, Mar A Lago IT Director) and started cooperating with Jack Smith’s team. This week we learned a more:
Former federal prosecutor Michael McAuliffe was reacting to confirmation that Mar-a-Lago IT worker Yuscil Taveras changed his under-oath testimony and provided evidence against Trump, his aide Walt Nauta, and Mar-a-Lago maintenance worker Carlos De Oliveira in order to avoid perjury charges.
NY State AG Leticia James hit Trump with a double barrel blast, asking for the court to sanction Trump for frivolous filings using arguments that have already been rejected by courts, AND revising upwards the amount Trump inflated his finances. Given how sensitive Trump is about anyone suggesting he’s not as rich as he claims to be that one really had to have wound up in the walls getting another coat of ketchup.
And there’s the big one – Mark Meadows bid to have his Georgia case moved to federal court shot down. At one point it seemed like there might be a slim chance Meadows, and after him others might prevail but in his order the judge pretty much slapped down every legal argument that the antics Meadows, Trump and the others engaged in down there in the Peach State had any legitimate federal purpose. Federal judge Steve Jones methodically shot down all of Meadows arguments and most if not all of his order can be applied to the others including Trump. I particularly liked this part of the opinion:
More broadly, Jones made it clear in his order that the Constitution “does not provide any basis for executive branch involvement with State election and post-election procedures.”
Ouch. Reminds me of this moment from a fun movie:
Oh, and for good measure E. Jean Carrol won a partial summary judgement against Trump in NYC civil court. She’d already gotten a 5 million judgement but he just couldn’t keep his fat mouth shut so she took him to court again. After this week’s ruling all that’s left is for a jury to decide (in January I think) how much it’s going to cost Trump for THIS bout of defamation.
I don’t know about you but I’d call that a bad week. A really bad week. Whether it’s the worst yet is debatable I supposed but I feel pretty confident in the weekend “Trump had a bad week” stories quickly morphing into “Trump has his worst week yet” stories.
Trump is being tormented daily. It’s death by a thousand cuts with some of the cuts being whacks from meat cleavers. It’s not just legal problems, but it’s starting to affect him politically too! Hell, as was noted here on PZ he showed up at an Iowa State football game and fans shouted out boos, and flipped him the bird! The pics of fans (lots of them) right outside his luxury skybox flipping him off was a real treat for me!
I think for most of us bad days seem to go on forever. Whether it’s at work, or at home or both when things suck we just want the day to be done and hope we can wind down enough to get some sleep, hoping that things will be better tomorrow. When we go through days, or weeks or even more of such day day-after-day? Well if you’ve been through it you get what I’m talking about.
THIS is Trump’s life now. His days and his dreams when he does manage to get some sleep are the stuff of nightmares. Everywhere he turns he’s got “bigly” problems and what has to be killing him inside is those bitter moments when he knows, he knows it’s his own damn fault.
I like the idea of him feeling tortured all day long, each and every day. And just wishing each damned day would be over and done with, yet dreading the nightmares he will wake up from in a cold sweat.
Time…It’s dragging out increasingly slowly for Trump and it’s only going to get worse.
There’s a word for it : Karma.
Perhaps all of us should send him lots and lots of MIRRORS. 🙂
you may be thinking of the quote attributed to Einstein (probably apocryphal) about how 5 seconds on a hot stove feels like a month but a day in the company of a pretty girl feels like 5 minutes, “that’s relativity”. more or less.
