The number of former MAGAs now forsaking Trump continues to grow, albeit because Trump is no longer Trump-enough in their minds. Still, any division on the Right is a good thing and works to weaken Trump’s base, something that scares him to death. (See tonight’s purported meeting at J.D. Vance’s residence of all major players except Trump.) We need not evaluate whether Candace Owens has “seen the light” and developed a soul. No, she is not really subtle. But she is now clearly aligned as opposing him, and that is noteworthy as she joins a growing line.
Owens spelled it all out for the never-to-be-sufficiently-damned Alex Jones on his show today, which sort of tells you all you need to know. Noteably, she doesn’t come right out and say that Trump is protecting himself by protecting the files, but she does point to the Epstein matter as the last straw – with a seemingly anti-Semitic message, too. From Rawstory, we get a report on the transcript:
“So the fact that he intentionally read the room wrong and then said, ‘If you’re still interested in the Epstein files, I don’t want you as my supporter anymore.’ He tweeted that effectively. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. No one should accept that.”
True, but no one is keeping her from making the next logical inference – that Trump is still, as ever, protecting himself in keeping the files sequestered, flagged, and clean (See e.g. Maxwell’s promotion). She will only go so far as to say that Trump is protecting others.
Owens admitted that she had initially believed that Trump “was going to be a solution to the deep state,” but changed her mind because “now it seems that he’s become it.”
Anyone thinking that Trump was going to earnestly clean up anything deserves to live through the aftermath. Trump hates anyone who doesn’t support him, and the fact that he cannot get the cultural elite to like him the way they (“we”) loved Obama has led him to destroy the state, which may be “draining” things, but not in a way that makes anything better.
“And it saddens me to say this, truly, someone that was really invested in [Trump]. I’m wondering whether or why he betrayed us, you know, what they have on him. We know that Israel has been running the most effective worldwide blackmailing.”
One should never equate opposition to Israeli national policy with anti-Semitism, but given Owen’s horrid history, it is permissible to read the above as rooted in having a problem with Jewish people generally. Again, there’s no doubt about Candace staying on the far right with all those who think like her, just her belief that Trump is out there with her.
The podcast host offered the theory that “Trump got funded somehow via Epstein for the world, you know, Miss America, whatever it was that he was involved in.”
“Yeah, Trump, I don’t think your supporters have left you. I think you’ve abandoned your supporters.”
We certainly cannot rule out that Epstein used various intelligence agencies to help fund Trump, though that relationship is now ancient history – more relevant than ever, but the funding thing isn’t the primary concern. It likely wouldn’t surprise anyone that Israel helped get Trump elected for the same reasons that Russia had such an interest. It hasn’t been proven yet (About Israel), but it’s not impossible, either. Epstein was heavily rumored to be involved with the intelligence community.
Owens is also furious that Trump has half-commuted Maxwell’s sentence by moving her from a low-security prison to a “minimum” security “camp” as they call it. She stated that the amenities are likely nicer than where she lives. One can debate that supposition all day long; we only know that neither Trump, Jones, Maxwell, nor Owens should be living the good life, all things considered.
Again, we all know better than to be welcoming. But in looking at Trump’s well-deserved freak-out, it is probably best to acknowledge that it is likely the thought of losing people like Owens, once a choir director in his base, that keeps Trump awake at night. That is a good thing overall. It makes him desperate, and desperate people make mistakes. It also works to dry up some support for the more extreme actions he might take, such as declaring an emergency or attempting to hold on to office post-2028.
So? Good. He deserves to lose support from all directions, even if our opposition to far-right creatures like Owens remains steadfast.
