Burlington, Vermont’s Ilona Maher is no shrinking violet when it comes to displaying her fierce athleticism on the Rugby pitch, in fact her abilities were a big factor in Team USA’s journey to winning its first ever Olympic medal (a bronze) the sport just today in Rugby 7s. And although Ilona did not score the winning try (rugby’s equivalent of a touch down) the player who did make the winning 90+ yard run back cited her as an inspiration:
“SAINT-DENIS, France — Backed up to their own goal line, and down to one final, desperate attempt at a medal, the Americans were doing everything they could think of to get a last-second score.
That was when the ball ended up in Alex Sedrick’s hands.
When the 26-year-old rugby sevens player caught a pass with eight seconds remaining until full-time Tuesday night, she had one mission: get across Australia’s goal line, and put up five game-tying points before the referee’s whistle ended the match…
…
On her scoring play, Sedrick took on two rapid-fire tackle attempts from Australian players, dropping them both in quick succession. After sidestepping the first would-be tackler, she bowled over the second. Then, all that stood between her and the Australian in-goal was the bright green of Stade de France’s pitch.“I mean, I’m just trying to channel my big girl, Ilona Maher, trying to just be like her to get downfield,” Sedrick said, referencing the viral clip of Maher leveling an opponent on a try earlier this week.“
Sedrick also made the extra point kick sealing the win fo Team USA!
As per usual the only fly in the ointment was some MAGA weirdo who had earlier questioned Ilona’s femininity to which she tearfully responded…
So the weirdo MAGA freaks “transvestigated” American rugby star and Olympian Ilona Maher and God bless her for calling out these creeps.
Keep calling these conservative assholes “weird” because they are and they’re going to lose in November because of it. pic.twitter.com/AlkpRiy9dd

Man, it pisses me off no end that some no doubt wretched excuse for a MAGA incel tapping away in his mama’s basement can cause even a moment’s distress to this beautiful and extraordinarily talented athlete…

Love to see the Freak Right spend an entire day debating whether or not a gorgeous, Olympic level athlete is “too masculine.”
It’s absolute loser behavior. pic.twitter.com/1iV5ZZpOx1

Yup, absolutely and we need to hang it around their necks from now to November.

Beautiful…
Don’t ever let ‘em make you cry again, Ilona. Every last one of them are not worth one of your tears.

She is AMAZING!!!
USA beats Australia in rugby?
That would be like Japan beating The USA in baseball.
Sounds like the same shit they gave https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holley_Mangold 12 years ago. Her brother Nick was a 7-time Pro Bowl center with the Jets, and she had a similar build.
I’d bet money Ilona would beat whatever pasty incel who called her ‘manly’ in some 1-on-1 rugby.
As someone who played rugby (and later coached under 12 boys and girls), there is no way I’d consider anyone playing ladies rugby is any less feminine than any other female athlete
I suppose in comparison someone who, presumably, grew up with the start, stop, let’s go into a huddle and wrap ourselves up in armour game in case we might get hurt thinks that girls playing rugby are ‘manly’.
I’d happily bet ten bucks if that incel tried to tackle her out on a rugby pitch she’d knock him on his Meal Team Six MAGA ass and run right over him. She is a smart, strong and beautiful woman. Not just an Olympic athlete, but a medal winning one who it seems is the leader, the heart and soul of her team. I think it’s safe to say where her political loyalties are. If, given the abuse and scorn she’s suffered for being a better athlete than her detractors and wants to just be a rugby player and stay out of the spotlight I can both understand and respect that. However, her “I’m going to the Olympics and you’re not” video makes me wonder if she’s willing to take on an activist role. I hope the Harris campaign reaches out to her. First to congratulate her on leading her team to a medal. And second to see if she’s willing to play a role in the campaign. I’ll bet she’d make a stunning vision walking out on the stage at the convention to give a short speech during primetime. There’s an army of current and former female athletes who would be energized. Like so many men who take part in sports they often go on to become leaders in their workplaces and communities. Maher could galvanize an entire new grassroots movement of athletes and not just females. Maybe we’ll even see her dancing and singing with Taylor Swift. Talk about driving Trump/MAGA batshit insane!
This lady is everything the magats/con xtians/rwnj’s fear: attractive, knows her mind, and healthy enough to put any one of the stoopie fucks in the hospital because she also seems like she won’t take any shit from anyone. To play rugby at pretty much any level you have be incredibly in shape (I played intramural at university). It doesn’t matter if it is male, female, mixed–no matter, it is a tough game that makes american football players look like a bunch of pansy asses.
I hope this lady continues on her path, wherever it takes her, and achieves the great things every intelligent being knows she can achieve. The right wing morons really don’t amount to shit anyway. After November they’ll hopefully amount to even less than shit.
My offspring (who all played rugby, including my daughter) normally refer to ‘American Football’ as “wimps’ rugby”
When I lived in Eringhaus on the campus of UNC-CH in the 70s, the rugby league played in the field below the dorm. It’s gone now but I used to say those guys were crazy but tough. It’s not for those afraid of contact. As the father of three daughters, I’m always happy to see a warrior like Ilona. Girls need role models like her to help offset all the cultural baggage they are faced with.
A FIERCE, American Warrior came to my mind. Takes courage to play “Sports” in a Man’s World. Women should do, whatever makes them strong & Happy! Blessings & love, to all American women who carry on…..
