This is disgusting. The British Ambassador to the U.S., Kim Darroch, has had an exemplary career. Due to the recent unfortunate leaking of emails, wherein he merely stated the obvious about Donald Trump, he incurred the wrath of the Child in Chief, who attacked him on Twitter yesterday. Read Trump’s tweets side by side with Darroch’s letter of resignation and you will see what an adult diplomat sounds like as opposed to a shrieking lunatic infant. My God. Trump has done nothing but disgrace this country in the eyes of the world and this is the worst episode yet.

Here’s Darroch’s resignation letter, courtesy of Axios:
“Since the leak of official documents from this embassy there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding my position and the duration of my remaining term as ambassador. I want to put an end to that speculation. The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.
Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador.
I am grateful to all those in the UK and the US, who have offered their support during this difficult few days. This has brought home to me the depth of friendship and close ties between our two countries. I have been deeply touched.
I am also grateful to all those with whom I have worked over the last four decades, particularly my team here in the US. The professionalism and integrity of the British civil service is the envy of the world. I will leave it full of confidence that its values remain in safe hands.”
Once more, a decent professional person, a real head of state, has come up against the boorish buffoon that squats in the Oval Office, and the good man ends up on the short end of the stick. This is horrifying. This is just one more reason why Trump needs to be defeated in 2020, or we will be forever branded as complete morons in the eyes of the world.
The rest of the civilized world does not respect Trump — they merely humor him. They go along to get along. This is a truly disgraceful moment in foreign relations and an absolute bottom for US/UK relations. I would ask that our British cousins forgive us, but if Trump gets reelected, we don’t deserve forgiveness. We deserve the censure of the world that we shall surely get. The under secretary of the Foreign Service said about Darroch, that he had served with “dignity, professionalism and class.” Would that the day dawns when we can once again say the same about our American president.
I am sorry I keep saying the same thing. EVERY DAY ! EVERY DAY a new trump stupidity, embarrassment fiasco to deal with. Jesus f ing Christ!
This is horrifying because the Brits really do have it down in the diplomacy area. They’ve been doing this for centuries. Trump sounds like some drunk in a pub, the way he berates this guy. And Darroch didn’t say one original thing about Trump — he merely ratified what everybody else has been saying for years. I only hope and pray he’s not reelected, because we truly will no longer be respected in the eyes of the world. America will become a second tier nation, a banana republic.
Ursula, I don’t see how we recover from this. I really don’t. trump and republicans have dragged us down to the depths.
My assessment is this: If Trump is voted out, then we can frame it as America briefly lost it’s way and fell for a conman. If he’s reelected, then the statement to the world will be that this is who America is, and intelligent, decent people are in the minority. That will be the message, that we’re a nation of lowlife.
What kills me about this is that Trump falls all over himself praising Putin and Kim, but reviles this guy.
I’m with Cmae on this one, Ursula. Some parts of this, we are never going to recover from. As I see it, we used up our mulligan with W (or do you think it coincidence that Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize so quickly?). With Trump, they now know the possibility of stupid leadership is no longer impossible as a frequent occurrence.
He did the right & honorable thing (for diplomacy reasons) by resigning but I have to admit part of me wanted the Brits to leave him in place just to proverbially poke Trump in the eye. Of course, the UK has major problems on its hands that are going to get worse as the year progresses and it’s a distraction they can’t afford. Still, it sucks. Maybe the UK will find itself needing an Ambassador to the U.N. & they can send him back over here. That would drive Trump nuts.
Darroch did the only thing that he could do. There’s zero communication now with Trump, so he can no longer do the job. it’s truly a shame that the ambassador got knee capped like this.

Yes, it has been duly noted that Trump loves Kim and Putin and all the rest, he praises them to the skies, but a legitimate British diplomat, telling the truth, goes down in flames. It sends a message to our allies that humoring the madman is the only way to do business. Isn’t that cheerful?
