BREAKING: Michael Cohen 1, William Barr 0

Well, well, this put a smile on my face. An hour or so ago, a federal district court judge ordered the Trump Department of Selective Justice to turn Michael Cohen loose, and return him to his home to continue his sentence under furlough.

At the center of the issue was an 8 category restriction list that Cohen was presented with to sign when he made a visit to his parole officer. According to Tom Winter at NBC News, seven of the eight restrictions were standard boilerplate. But the top one was a prohibition for Cohen to speak in public, speak to the media, or publish a book of any kind. This was critical since Cohen had made it clear that he was in the final stages of a book that would be published before the election.

The judge was withering in his criticism. He told government prosecutors that he had never seen such a cheap stunt in his 21 years on the bench.  He noted that while the paper Cohen was expected to sign forbade him to publish a book, standard Bureau of Prisons guidelines now only allow an inmate to publish a book, it encourages them to do so! With that in mind, the judge could not find any way that the act was not purely retaliatory in nature.

Basically the judge turned it over to the two sides to thrash it out. The judge pointed out that since an inmate normally didn’t have the ability to speak publicly, or to the media, that shouldn’t be an issue. But one thing he made crystal clear. Michael Cohen is welcome to publish his book any damn time he wants, and there is nothing that the Trump DOJ can do about it.

You know, it’s one thing to be a totally bought and paid for, corrupt Attorney General. But when it becomes obvious that you’re a pathetically incompetent totally bought and paid for, corrupt Attorney General, it begs the question, What was the point? The worlds best negotiator my ass.

    • You and me both…And the best thing is now that BVarr dfailed, you can bet that Trump is busy ripping him a new ass!!!

      • Part of the reason Cohen got release to home confinement in the first place was there was a Covid-19 outbreak at his prison & he apparently has medically documented respiratory issues. I believe his lawyer was telling the truth when he said if accepting the condition of no statements, books etc. was required to keep him out of prison that Cohen would have agreed. Being the ham-handed dumbasses that Trump’s attorney goons are they never even gave him a chance after putting pressure on him and giving him and his lawyer a chance to negotiate something. By forcing the issue Trump’s “squad” forced the matter into court and got their asses handed to them! Oops.

What I fear at this point is that since the outbreak of the disease exists in that prison (as in so many others) Barr will have dispatched a lackey to give in-person instructions to have inmates with the disease breathe into the ventilation to Cohen’s cell, on his food, and spit in their hands and wipe down the exterior of the door and walls around it to try and give him the disease. Yes, I think Trump and Barr are that twisted and evil. If I were Cohen between now and release I wouldn’t eat or drink anything that hasn’t been pre-packaged and delivered by his lawyers. And not go through out-processing without good PPE gear provided by them and directly to him in his cell.

        • There’s twisted and evil and then there’s basic competence to pull off a simple plan that a kindergarten class could pull off. My doubts on that one bring to mind this paraphrase of a joke from Neil Gaiman’s American Gods: how do we know that Trump had nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein expiring in custody? Well, he’s the late Jeffrey Epstein, isn’t he?

          • A LOT of very powerful people had plenty of incentive to want Epstein dead & also had connections with the kind of people who could make that happen. Trump, via Billy Barr could be pretty confident someone would see to ensuring Epstein was silenced forever and all Barr had to do was facilitate making it easy to get to him.

          • Problem: once you’ve seen the trick in action, you know what to look for. As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m confident that his associate Maxwell has a deadman’s switch set up in the event of her untimely departure from life. They take her out, she takes them all down. The biggest miscalculation on Epstein was thinking it ended with him.

As to Cohen, he’s a lot less hateable and will be likely just fine. Never forget how Trump has driven away the competent people.

  1. Yeah, that one was never going to fly with any judge worthy of their gavel. All Barr has managed is to make another anti-Trump book a guaranteed best seller right when his boss needs it least.

  2. irrespective of the legality of the Barr-fly’s ‘conditions’, it simply forbade him to PUBLISH a book. There was nothing to say he couldn’t WRITE it and publish later.
