Anthony Scaramucci is proving why he didn’t last a week as White House Communications Director, he doesn’t know how to leave things unsaid, and then says things that cannot be defended.
Take this, for example:
“Trump’s gonna drop out of the race because it’s gonna become very clear. Okay, it’ll be March of 2020. He’ll likely drop out by March of 2020. It’s gonna become very clear that it’s impossible for him to win,” the former (short-lived) White House communications director said in an interview with Vanity Fair published Friday.
“And is this the kind of guy that’s gonna want to be that humiliated and lose as a sitting president?” asked Scaramucci, who in recent weeks has turned on and feuded with his former boss, likening him to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Now, of course, there is nothing we’d like more than … we’ll get back to that.
Let’s get some easy stuff out of the way, first, in our dealing with Mooch. One, as a “commentator” on politics of the day, Mooch should not make specific predictions that can be easily disproven. As a seasoned commentator or former Communications Director, he should have the average sense that god gave all mammals and said something like: “I suspect there is a good chance Trump will not even make it to 2020 because he will not like facing an impending loss.” Say something so general that no one can come back and make you look like such a complete idiot. Mooch? You gave a specific month in predicting the least predictable man in history? C’mon, man.
Next, your reasoning needs some work. You state that it will become clear to Trump that he cannot win, and given the options, he’ll choose to walk away.
Anthony? Were you around the last time that Trump ran for public office? In that race, there was no point in which he looked like he could win, not one, until the night of the election. He still loves talking about that win. What makes you think a “sure loss” means anything to this man? He never thinks he’s lost, he’s incapable of that kind of self-honesty.
Last,
“[Trump’s] got the self-worth in terms of his self-esteem of a small pigeon. It’s a very small pigeon. Okay,” Scaramucci continued about Trump. “And so you think this guy’s gonna look at those poll numbers and say — he’s not gonna be able to handle that humiliation.”
Wait, what?
He has the self-esteem of a pigeon? What? Maybe a pigeon that thinks it doesn’t shit. A pigeon that believes it can fly to the moon. Trump lacks a whole lot of things, Mooch, but “self-esteem” isn’t one. Did you mean to say that Trump had the courage of a small pigeon? Or the arrogance of a Great White Shark? Those make infinitely more sense. Now, stating that Trump will not be able to handle that kind of humiliation is correct, though it presupposes that Trump will ever entertain that he could, in fact, lose the election and foresee the embarrassment coming upon him, or, indeed, knows the definition of embarrassment.
The other thing Anthony Scaramucci is leaving out is that Trump may suspect that “being president” might be the only job that allows him to steer clear of NY AG charges, and possible federal charges from the next AG (though I doubt he will face federal charges absent an impeachment and conviction. Presidents are loathe to imprison prior presidents). True, being president doesn’t give him immunity to the NY State AG and possible criminal charges, but it may as well be immunity, because are the NY State Police going to haul Trump out of the White House and prosecute him as president? The federal government thinks it is bad to indict a sitting president, imagine what they think of individual states indicting him? Would you like to open the door to Wyoming charging President Malia Obama?
All of this pre-supposes that Trump wants out of the race, and we want him out of the race. I am not sure we do. As a progressive Democrat, I find it much easier to run against Trump and all his missteps and attitude, that against a William Weld, a former Mass. governor, or Mark Sanford (R. Cong. South Carolina, and a former governor himself. Both of those people appear sane, and if they were running on the Republican ticket, I am not sure they would do worse than Trump, they might well do better.
So, we’ll leave it open, for now, about whether we even want Trump to dump himself. We have learned lessons that Anthony Scaramucci hasn’t learned. But no one gave us the Communications job at the White House, even for a weekend. Damn.

I hope he’s right but I have huge doubt. 45 has too much ego to drop out. The only way I see that happening is repugnants grow a spine and pull any support for him, again, doubtful. Drove down Highway 505 in CA today and saw two HUGE signs with flags on the corners – Trump 2020: The People’s President. Don’t know what that farmer is drinking but there those signs were.
