The Nicetown-Tioga area of north Philadelphia erupted in gunfire in the past hour and the shooting is still ongoing.

There are not a lot of details available at this time. This was published at 2:56 p.m. Pacific in the Washington Post:

Dramatic live footage from media helicopters showed scores of officers swarming a home in a residential neighborhood. On the ground, reporters’ microphones picked up sounds of gunfire.

Authorities have not yet provided details about what led to the shootout.

One officer was shot in the head, but is “conscious and communicating,” police told the Philadelphia Inquirer. A second officer was hit in one or both arms, and the third and fourth suffered unknown gunshot wounds.

The local CBS affiliate reported that officials believe the injuries to be “non-life-threatening.”

This is a developing story and will be updated. in the meantime, bear in mind that we had the Gilroy shooting on July 28, followed by the El Paso shooting on August 3, and Dayton on August 4.

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Pacific, six officers have been shot. One suspect has been apprehended but shooting was still going on as of 45 minutes ago. Raw Story has audio of the police dispatcher and police talking when the incident began. I can’t embed it here, but you can hit the link.

  1. CNN is reporting that the incident was sparked by suspected drug activity.

NBC is reporting it was the result of an attempt to serve a warrant.

    Fox is blaming Obama.

  2. The mass shooting du jour. This one is unique given the number of cops shot and thankfully not killed.

The sun is now down in Philadelphia, this may help the shooter.
