This is the moment of truth, right here, as to whether Trump’s three appointees to the Supreme Court will do what he put them there to do, which is act in his personal interest. Monday morning Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to block a judge’s order that the IRS give years of his tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday. If the Court would do that, it could mean that the Committee would not receive the returns for several more years, if at all. Ergo, Trump runs out the clock, manipulates the system, he wins. CNBC:

The request to delay the execution of the judicial order pending a planned appeal came days after Trump lost an attempt to reverse the order at a federal appeals court.

“This case raises important questions about the separation of powers that will affect every future President,” Trump’s lawyers said in their emergency application to Chief Justice John Roberts. The chief justice has authority over such petitions from cases arising from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Trump’s lawyers asked the court to act by Wednesday to delay an appeals court ruling that cleared the way for the IRS to deliver the tax returns on Thursday.

The delay would give Trump time to formally ask the high court to hear an appeal of the ruling. But the lawyers also said the Supreme Court could consider Monday’s filing itself a request to hear the case.

The filing accused the committee of trying to get Trump’s tax returns solely for the purpose of releasing them to the public, and not for a review of IRS audits of presidents, as the House panel has stated. […]

A Supreme Court case challenging the order could take months or longer to resolve.

And if Republicans regain majority control in the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections, before the Supreme Court case is resolved, they are expected to end the Ways and Means Committee’s three-year-long bid to get Trump’s tax returns.

There’s a lot riding on this application to the Supreme Court, to say the very least. Trump has been lying for years that he would provide the tax returns. He will never do so voluntarily.

Right now he’s hoping that he can keep the returns hidden so that he won’t have to deal with the issue if/when he runs in 2024. Obviously, evidence of how he has ripped off the government and paid less in taxes than the ordinary man or woman in the street is not going to help his nomination bid.

At least we won’t have long to wait for a decision. That’s the good news.

  1. SCOTUS ordered Trump’s tax returns to be released to New York prosecutors over a year ago. What would be the rationale for withholding them from Congress?

    • Another chance for them to prove they truly are craven, political hacks? They did miss an opportunity-if he’s finally put away, they’ll have no more chances to suck his little mushroom dick.

  2. Spoiler alert: they’re not going to bother. The moment he appointed his trio of losers was the same moment he lost any leverage he had over them. Add in how all he’s doing is getting in the way of their business and they’ll once again tell him to pound sand.

Seriously, people, how many f***ing times do you have to see him strike out with this SCOTUS before you see the pattern?

  3. Traitor Tot’s tax returns must have proof of some really serious crimes considering how hard he is trying to block anyone from seeing them! Non-criminal politicians have freely released their tax returns…the only reason not to is to hide evidence of a crime or crimes!!

    • Well, in Trump’s case it would also show the man to be far less than the “billionaire extraordinaire” on which he’s built his entire reputation, especially with his moronic supporters. Granted, you’d think those idiots would’ve figured that out with all his constant requests for “donations” to deal with this problem or that problem but we’re not dealing with folks who have more than a single functioning brain cell.

That trying to hide how much he’s REALLY worth has generally been the explanation for why he refused to release the returns in 2016.

  4. The operative word in the statute authorizing Ways & Means to obtain those tax returns is “SHALL”, as in upon a duly authorized request from the committee the IRS SHALL hand them over. Not “may”, or “except in certain circumstances” but SHALL. It was never a question of law and Secretary of the Treasury “Munchkin” knew it! Trump knew it. EVERYONE knew it. But YEARS later this goddamned game keeps going on. It’s time for it to end. I for one agree with those who believe SCOTUS, with the possible exception of Thomas want no part of this. As for Trump’s three appointees they got what they wanted from him and don’t need him anymore. They have other priorities and covering Trump’s ass would make it more difficult to impose more Dobbs type shit on this country.
