We heard that if fascism came to America it would come wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. No, instead it came down a gold escalator, surrounded by paid actors from a company called The Extra Mile, and accompanied by a fashion model.

And maybe there’s something quintessentially American about that, if you stop to think about it. Americans were adverse to trying fascism the old fashioned way, from following crazies on soap boxes in the park, but listening to a game show host and tabloid star talk about doing the impossible, building walls, taking America back to the 1950’s? That was the ticket, apparently.

I don’t know if the photo that you see atop this piece was something spontaneous or if the crowd was instructed to make this gesture. I suspect the latter. The Trump Nazi salute apparently involves not just the traditional outstretched arm, but an outstretched finger on that arm. Unless, of course, you prefer the white power symbol, which a few folks are opting for as well, if you look carefully.

“The stock market finished the worst half of the year since 1872.” The hell you say. I think that things were a bit jittery in the year 1929 before it all came tumbling down in the Fall, but what do I know?

I guess it’s okay if you do a lefty salute, too.

That’s a scam Trump hasn’t tried: Give all your money and possessions to him and go wait in the woods for a flying saucer to come.

He is pushing the false Ukraine narrative to the hilt. This is his number one talking point everywhere he goes.

There is more to the thread if you want to go over to Twitter and read it in its entirety. The simple truth of the matter is that Russian propaganda is touted openly by the right-wing media, and Steve Bannon in particular. As Carmody puts it, “the  “brilliance” of Steve Bannon is that he has convinced tens of millions of people to believe that destroying democracy is a noble/patriotic objective as long as it occurs while chanting “America First.'”

It really is that simple. And now Trump is feeding fascist dogma to MAGA from the podium, and the rubes respond with a fascist salute.

We are in trouble plenty. MAGA is synonymous with fascism and the MAGA leader is criticizing the traditional Republican party at every turn. It looks like there is a bona fide third party being created here, unless the entire Republican power structure, what’s left of it, decides that fascism under the MAGA flag is their new identity. That is possible. When the GOP got in bed with Trump, all bets were automatically off.

The key issue will be if Trump does decide to run in 2024. He is not going to announce that until after the midterm elections, barring some new development and the way things look right now, a lot of his anointed candidates might just go down in flames. Then we will be looking at a very different picture.

Add to that situation the fact that, after all, Trump can only serve one more term if he is elected and his chances of being the 2024 nominee grow dimmer still. Unless…unless he decides to run as a third party and maybe that will happen. Don’t rule it out, in any event.

  2. I’m afraid for our country. Roughly a third of our voters support tRump. This group is so easily pumped up into a salivating angry mob. The only way to stop it is to hold this malignant narcissist accountable, is to apply our laws. Yes, it may rile some people up but it’s better than the alternative. The destruction of our democracy/constitution. I would like to believe my high school/college instructors were correct. No person is above the law. Cheeto head & his sycophants shield of lies must be pierced. God help us because we the people are failing.

  4. People read this stuff and some shake their heads in disbelief, that any number of Americans could be so fucking stupid, gullible and easily persuaded against all fact and logic. Some just chuckle and think it will never get out of hand. Wake up, folks- it IS out of hand and rallies like this prove it. I don’t necessarily agree with every Democratic platform but they’re not going to destroy democracy. Vote Blue in such overwhelming numbers that even the densest Trumpers will get the message.
