I don’t know if you caught Donald Trump boogying to the tune “YMCA” at the Sanford, Florida rally Monday night — but he did. For a few short moments he shook his booty, which immediately put me in mind of Fat Elvis. I think that the only attention draw, visceral call to juvenile behavior, burn it all down sign that Trump hasn’t waved at this point, is that he hasn’t donned a jump suit and cape and dark aviator glasses and started crooning. Don’t put it, or anything else, past him, however, because at this point he needs to do something desperate. What worked in 2016 is not working now. Here’s what’s different. Charlie Sykes, the Bulwark:
- In 2016, late deciding voters broke heavily for Trump in the final days of the campaign. This year, undecided voters are breaking for Biden.
- Trump’s base may be strong, but he’s not holding all of his coalition together. Via the NYT: “Four years ago, Mr. Trump’s strength among white voters without a college degree helped him breach the so-called blue wall of traditionally Democratic Northern battleground states, including Michigan and Wisconsin. The new surveys show him well short of matching 2016 levels of support among white voters, leaving the president with a daunting deficit with just three weeks until the election.”
- In 2016, Trump won seniors. This year, he’s losing them. They vote.
- People actually like Joe Biden. Hillary Clinton had historically ghastly approval ratings, but in a CNN poll, Biden’s net favorability was +16 points among likely voters.
- No challenger has ever polled as strongly as Biden. Via CNN: “In the 21 previous presidential elections since 1936, there have only been five challengers who led at this time. Of those five, only one (Bill Clinton in 1992) was ahead by more than 5 points. None of those five were earning more than 48% of the vote in the polls. In other words, Biden is the first challenger to be above 50% at this late juncture in the campaign.”
Three weeks today. You believe we’re that close? We are.

From the huge increase in mail in voting, to the very large numbers of people voting early, I believe it will be a blue tsunami. Like you said, the poll numbers back that up.
It reminds me of the line that a Japanese commander came up with in WWII, “I fear that we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.” The electorate is that giant, and Trump woke it up. Now it will eat him.
It is reputed to have been said by Admiral Yamamoto, but unfortunately there’s no record of him ever actually saying it (it never apepared anywhere until the filming of ‘Tora. Tora. Tora’.
He did, however say: “A military man can scarcely pride himself on having ‘smitten a sleeping enemy’; it is more a matter of shame, simply, for the one smitten. I would rather you made your appraisal after seeing what the enemy does, since it is certain that, angered and outraged, he will soon launch a determined counterattack.”
I think we just need to change the gender of the giant to female and we’re,good…cause it’s gonna be women who save our democracy.
Already voted. And got my wide behind out the way for more voters 🙂 Had a 15 minute wait when door opened at 7am. Line went quite rapidly. I assume most folks voted for one party right down the line. I did. Saw only 2 -4 folks without masks. One was a politician… gee, guess which party. Then attempted to give me a brochure.

Elvis was a great talent and I certainly enjoyed his work. But there is a resemblance between the “Fat Elvis stage” of his life, let’s put it that way, and where Trump is now. When Elvis was tanking, a lot of people were around him just for money and what they could get. That’s where Trump is now.
In Texas we have to overcome trump and the 5th circuit who can’t believe having only one drop off location for each county does not put up a barrier to voting absentee.

Those nine seconds in the video felt like nine days. He. Makes. Me. Sick. In. The. Stomach. It’s a visceral response, I know it, and it means I have to turn off the TV, my Think Pad, or computer if anything is on that shows him talking, walking, pointing and moving his hands from center to each side, anything. First time in my life this has been a consistent reaction.

The unprecedented attempts to suppress the vote especially the mail-in vote likely to be used by Democratic voters may be enough to sway the election in favor of the Republican because we always have close elections and 2 or 3 points can make the difference in electoral votes. Including the ability of governors to name an alternate set of electors and the resulting disagreement would end up in the Supreme court. Yes, I do think the Supreme Court will support the Republicans.
All the above ignores the equally unprecedented efforts to push past such suppression to vote anyway. One does not get 11 hour lines in Marietta, Georgia by a successful voter suppression operation.
There are a lot more early voters who are D – and not enough undecided voters to change things in most states.
All of that is CT. There will be no “alternative electors,” as exciting as that sounds. Nothing will ever get close to the Supreme Court. And mail in voting issue — don’t believe anything Trump says about it.

Joy then played a taped interview showing her doing exactly the opposite of her goddamn SWORN testimony.
