The Trump ministry of propaganda is burning the midnight oil these days, as we are now 33 days out from election day and they are desperate.  The Daily Beast is reporting

Facebook has removed a Trump campaign ad that made the baseless assertion that offering sanctuary to refugees would expose more Americans to COVID-19. The fear-mongering ad showed Joe Biden, shrouded in a blood-red filter, talking about the border and asylum-seekers. It went on to claim, again without producing any evidence, that his policies would increase the number of refugees from Syria, Somalia, and Yemen by “700 percent” while flashing the words: “TERROR HOTSPOTS.” The ads were seen by hundreds of thousands of people before Facebook took action.

Monger fear and ratchet up anxiety to match Trump’s red faced, Hitler-esque screaming. Find the racist vein and mainline it with vitriol. That is the complexion of Republican politics these days. And it gets worse — as you know it must. The Guardian:

Although Facebook removed the ads regarding refugees and Covid-19, other misleading advertisements remain on the platform. One ad shows Joe Biden with a headphone photoshopped to his ear, perpetuating the false claim that the presidential candidate somehow cheated in the debates.

The advertisement appears to have been launched on the day of the debate but remains active on the platform, with more than 800 versions still active. The ads have been viewed by more than 3.6 million people, the majority of whom are in the key election states of Florida and Pennsylvania, according to Facebook data.

The Trump campaign’s ads have led to the “earpiece” conspiracy theory spreading organically on other social media platforms, including TikTok, according to the watchdog group Media Matters. The group has found four examples of TikTok videos espousing the theory that have been viewed more than 560,000 times. A spokesperson for TikTok said the videos violate its policies on disinformation and it is working to remove them as they are posted.

“You would not have seen the proliferation of conspiracy theories on TikTok today if there was not already an intense saturation of this idea from the Trump campaign yesterday,” said Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters. “They sort of seeded the ground with this idea until the users themselves were driving it.”

The Trump campaign are like rats in a grain silo, consuming whatever they can and despoiling the rest. Unfortunately, the grain silo is social media and television and the rest of us live there, too.

  1. I would have thought that it would be almost impossible to ‘cheat’ in a debate when your opponent won’t let you say anything without interruption

  2. 51/43 are the numbers right now. 6% are either for third parties or undecided. Other polls show 1 and 2 % for a couple of guys running 3rd party. So there are only about 3 to 4 % undecided. Unless you have been in a coma for years, I don’t know how you can be undecided. The undecided was much larger in 2016.

  3. So much for their “vaunted” algorithms. I just had a depressing conversation with my sister (it started out ok but at the end my heart sank) back in southern Illinois and it included discussion of social media, bad information and unintended consequences as in the development of social media and how pervasive it’s become.

I’ve said before FB is in the tank for Trump and has been since before he wound up in the WH. They don’t want Biden to win, and definitely don’t want Biden in the WH with Democrats in control of both chambers of Congress.

    • They had people embedded in Parscale’s outfit in 2016. “In the tank” isn’t even close – they were feeding data directly to his campaign.

      • Over in Europe and in some other places I think with legitimately elected governments there have been some moves to regulate FB. What Zuckerberg is terrified of is the U.S. being a force in organizing freely elected governments with free or damn near free speech to enact regulations. He’ll still make a ton of money, but like so many people no amount of wealth is ever enough. Not to mention power. Unchecked he wields an enormous amount. NO person not duly elected to hold high public off ice should hold the amount of power Zuckerberg has attained. It’s long past time to clip his wings, and if we are in control of Congress haul his and Sandber’s butts back in and instead of Committee members doing their little speechifyng and asking an easily dodged question or two hire staff counsel who really know this stuff do most of the questioning and in longer than five or ten minute blocks. Shit hammer the hell out of them. Of course their counsel will be interrupting the proceedings and THAT is when members can be allowed by the Chair to toss in some heckling along the lines of “why are you afraid to answer the question? type!

    • She needs to leave her downstate bubble because Chicago is going to crush his orange ass. And anyone who says otherwise can kiss MY Chicago ass. I’ve had a chip on my shoulder about downstate ever since they started complaining that COVID-19 was a (racism alert!) “Chicago problem” that didn’t affect them. Well, that’s changed.

      • I’m from a town just six miles from Carbondale and my higher education was at SIU-C. Being in my sixties I remember when that part of Illinois had liberal, Democratic Representatives in the House. Kenny Gray and then Paul Simon before he became a Senator. Yes, the District has changed shape since I left at age 26 for the Marines, but it’s also changed politically. My hometown is now MAGAville in nature. In fact, the only other member of my family still living is I’m sure going to vote for Trump based on the conversation I had with her today. She was disgusted by Trump’s antics in the debate, but leveled plenty at Biden too. And when she got on Kamala Harris her string of insults almost included the word whore but she caught herself just in time as she knows how liberal I am. Prior to the debate coming up nothing political had been discussed (her birthday was yesterday and I called at an inconvenient time for a long talk so she called me today) so it had been a nice conversation and fun up until then. We’ve had enough chats over the years devolve into pretty angry stuff so it wasn’t long after that that she and I both said at the same time we needed to let the other get on with their day! I think she realized I was fighting not to challenge her and ruin her birthday which had been one of her happiest, especially given the good news about her husband’s health the day before. But it wound up depressing me all the same. Most of my hometown thinks like her, which is why some years ago she stopped trying to talk me into moving back there.
