McConnell has been specifically asked starting in the spring whether, if a SCOTUS vacancy came up he’d adhere to the standard he applied in 2016 or go ahead and confirm another Trump nominee. The motherfucking asshole couldn’t even contain a smirk as he said of course he’d proceed and fill the vacancy!
If anything, the polling indicating Trump is in deep shit, and even the GOP Senate majority is in real jeopardy is such that McConnell will move with lightening speed to fill the vacancy. It all depends on what his internal polling shows with some key races. Endangered Senators too. But given their cowardice about standing up to either Trump or McConnell they will do what they are told instead of doing the right and honorable thing.
TRUMP has to be onboard for it to work. And unless he gets something out of this for himself, this is going nowhere.
He’s already (tonight) issued a statement saying he’ll nominate someone and that a vote will be held. I think you’re correct he’ll try to play some game of getting something he wants, but he NEEDS those “evangelicals” and if he screws them on this he’s toast and he knows it. The other thing I’d ask you to consider is Trump’s own personality. If it sinks into his mind that he’s likely to lose and there are signs he’s thinking about that possibility more and more he is EXACTLY the type of person who will burn down the whole damn house after trapping everyone else inside. IOW he will go bat-shit crazy fucking over any and everybody including this entire country for retribution. Of course, women in HIS family will be able to fly to another country for the full range of reproductive services including birth control! His laughter over stuff like that will be such that if there is a Satan the devil himself will feel his blood run cold.
Certain Senators enamored of the perks and privileges of their seats are now in a no-win situation. Some are quietly making noises tonight that they will resist putting a new Justice on the Court and leave it up to whomever is elected in November. Counting on them to come through and do the right thing is like hoping a prolific child molester will suddenly feel mercy for a child the are abusing. Possible, in theory but in the real world not at all likely.
I AM keeping his personality in mind, Denis, which is why it’s equally likely he’ll screw over the evangelicals for not keeping him safe if he loses by denying them their precious SCOTUS seat.
No doubt in my mind is we HAVE to expand the # of justices on the supreme court.
It’s going to be a fight. One thing though: all the people saying “Oh this’ll fire up the Republican base” — it will life up only the basest of the base, only those who were 100% committed to already voting for Trump. The one is the middle, the swingy, the wavering ones? They won’t care — this is insider baseball. It might fire up some on the left though.
Yeah, my impression is the fight isn’t going to go like everyone’s calling it in their collective panic right now. Trump will drag his feet and use it as a bargaining chip.

Blood simple, Brakester…Trump is only in it for Trump. What McConnell wants is of no importance to him…at all. Ergo, he’ll be in no rush to nominate anybody, regardless of McConnell’s wishes. Hoarse has a good track record on calling Trump’s narc behavior…good as in impeccable. So I trust that judgment.

I’m shocked and sadden by this news. May Judge Ginsberg rest in peace. She was a great jurist, a wonderful legal mind. Her passing is now a great loss to the liberal side of the Supreme Court, we are now doomed, Trump and McConnell will now push through another Conservative to the court, even though past precedent says the vacancy should stay open until the after the election.
My man Hoarse Whisperer, who’s been the best barometer on Trump’s moves I’ve ever seen, has said Trump won’t lift a finger to help McConnell on this one. He’ll want to use a replacement as another election bargaining chip, regardless if it winds up costing the GOP.
