Nikki Haley is another member of the Susan Collins Club of Concern. She was “deeply disturbed” about Donald Trump’s remarks about Charlottesville. Be that as it may, she won’t actually come out and go against Trump, like other former staffers and appointees have done, but her clumsy attack on Joe Biden has had the effect of being an endorsement — at least that’s how Twitter is seeing it.

Since right now we’re living in a fascist state under Donald Trump and his henchman Bill Barr wants to find a legal rationale to destroy democracy — and that’s putting it tactfully — a dramatic move to the left would get us almost to the center, maybe. There is no way that what Haley is woefully imagining is in any way bad.

Haley is so out of touch that in trying to point up the downside of a Biden vote, she actually ended up giving a great argument for it.

  1. When referring to (a regular irritant) Salmon P. Chase Lincoln once remarked something to the effect that once the Presidential grub starts to gnaw on someone it forever controls them. There’s no small amount of examples of people who’ve been obsessed with becoming President, sometimes good ones and sometimes bad. And a plethora of those who’ve made fools of themselves in the process of trying to become President.

I doubt I’m alone in thinking that Haley has had her eye on the Oval Office for quite a few years. She has long been considered as a potential marquee name in GOP politics although there’s always been some doubt that the “white guy’s Party” would nominate a woman for the top spot on the ticket, much less one of color. Still, she checked off a lot of “see – we aren’t sexist or prejudiced” boxes for them so being a VP pick in the coming decade was a virtual given.

Haley is smart. No question about it. She’s also until recently displayed a significant amount of political savvy, and even guts. I’ll give her props for grabbing the bull by the horns and taking down that confederacy worshipping state flag in SC. It hurt her some with the true goobers but gave her a true national profile and her gamble payed off. She could have had any number of jobs in the Trump administration and she chose wisely to stay the hell out of DC. As a Governor, even one with major international employers she needed diplomatic credentials and aiming for (I’m sure) and getting the post as UN Ambassador was a master stroke. A “twofer” so to speak. It kept he distanced from the day to day Trump antics in DC and gave her actual, broad international credentials she could point to down the road. She also recognized the value of, once she’d punched that ticket of getting the hell out of Trump World making her one of the few who seemed to have done so without getting covered in too much Trump stink.

Only a fool would think she wasn’t setting herself up for a 2024 run, and the more Trump was Trump even the old white guys of the GOP elite might have decided she (as I think she was calculating) that she would be the best way for their Party to put the Trump experience behind them – someone as unlike Trump as a candidate could be and with actual, core conservative bona fides AND most importantly only loosely tied to Trump.

That last part is important because until recently, it was something that COULD have been finessed with a fair number of independents.

Now, I realize we have long since gotten past the point where as soon as one Presidential election is over people start running for the next one – even before the inauguration! That’s just the way it is in this country and even major media can’t resist, once a Presidential election is decided starting the very next day speculating on who will be running (whether to follow a President “termed out” or to oppose them) the next time. Haley knows all this as well as anyone and even if she wasn’t actually approached to be a token “bi-partisan” appointment to some position with a Biden administration she would have had folks of her own sending up trial balloons to get her name in the news – especially when she shot them down! The point is that all she had to do was sit back and wait.

Oh, she might have had to hedge her bets a bit just in case Trump somehow won and made a token appearance but even after the disaster of a summer Trump was having she apparently decided to take on an actual, true supportive of Trump role. First at the RNC, and now this. WTF? I think she’s blown it. Not that I’m complaining mind you. But even though Trump is playing “pong at high speed” whack-a-mole and could at best only throw a couple of bat-shit crazy tweets about “where is Nikki Haley?” her way it sure looks like she’s going if not “all in” then firmly into “we need for more years of Trump” mode.

I don’t get it. All those years she’s spent carefully setting herself up for what I believe would have been a serious Presidential run and she’s tossing it right out the window of the Trump train! Again, I don’t really mind because I think that like John Kasich might have been she’d have made a formidable GOP candidate. However, if she hasn’t already passed the point of no return it looks like she’s taking a run to jump over it and into the cesspool that will leave her permanently coated with Trumpian orange shit with a smell that will be experienced by anyone within miles of her.

All she had to do was lay low for another couple of months. And her eagerness to be President got the better of her and she jumped the gun.

  2. My question to Nikki (who apparently has some Native American heritage, as do I) is: why a vote for Kamala Harris is a bad thing. Just can’t quite wrap my head around this one…

    • Um, are you effin’ joking? “Nikki (who apparently has some Native American heritage . . .)?”

The woman has as much “Native American heritage” as Vladimir Putin or Kim Jong Un. Her parents were both born and raised in INDIA (specifically, the Punjab region). This is NOT some kind of secret.

      • No need to be nasty. Someone probably said that Haley was Indian, as in “one little, two little, three little Indians..” and she is correcting what she thought was a labeling faux pas. She was mistaken, that’s all.
