The timing of this announcement is as intriguing as the announcement itself. Kellyanne Conway, arguably Donald Trump’s most vociferous defender and of the longest duration, has announced that she is leaving the White House the end of the month, citing family needs as her reason for resignation. Husband George Conway, interestingly, is also stepping back from the Lincoln Project. Washington Post:

The Conways became an object of fascination as George Conway ramped up his criticism of the president in 2018 while Kellyanne Conway remained a top adviser to Trump.

George Conway has written, among other things, that Trump is not mentally fit to be president.

The president has voiced anger at times about George Conway’s comments, calling him a “a stone cold LOSER & husband from hell.”

Before making her decision, Conway had been in discussions with the Trump campaign. Senior advisers on the campaign had suggested she take a leave of absence from the White House to join Trump’s reelection effort, and anticipated a significant role where she would travel to two states a day between now and the election.

But Conway said she could not envision herself in that role right now, spending so much time away from her family.

Kellyanne Conway will devote herself to home schooling her kids. Pundits will chime in on the deeper meaning of all this. It’s very possible that Kellyanne got with Trump because the money was so good, and now that the gravy train looks like it’s rolling to a halt, she’s thinking ahead. Who knows? We’ll hear a lot in the next few days, I’m sure. Not to be cynical, but the go to excuse all Republicans use when they resign a position is to spend more time with the family. Perhaps in this case it’s true.

    • That’s what I think. They have a fairly major problem right there – I think the daughter needs mental health help, not emancipation.

    • I just picked up that end of the story and did another blog on it. Wow. This Trump phenomenon has ripped families apart and so this comes as no surprise.

    • She could have stayed on until the end of the campaign. There’s still more money to be made — if money is the object. Money is a wonderful thing, but at some point, trading off other values for it becomes way too costly. I don’t think that’s Pollyanna-ish thinking, I believe it to be true.

  1. Christ and Heru, the one night I pick to go to bed early, THIS story breaks. All I can say is, as a metaphor for what Trump has done to any seemingly strong, solid group of people’s unity, this is a pretty good one.

  2. If Kellyanne was worried about her children — as she should be — she would not be waiting to the end of the month, nor would she be speaking at the TrumpShow! She would have left when her eldest went viral on social media (instead of forcing her off social media). She and George are deceptive dissimulators, hypocrites at best. Neither can be trusted to tell any truth. Though I think they wrote A Warning. I’m pretty sure they took both sides of the coin to try and remain relevant whatever happened. Clearly that plan has been harmful to at least one of the children.
