As you undoubtedly read earlier, either here or elsewhere, it’s no longer any secret that if/when Donald Trump loses November 3, he’s going to cry “fraud” at the top of his lungs. Kayleigh McEnany made that clear at her Wednesday presser. Trump, we were assured, would be “taking a hard look” to make sure that the election was a “free and fair one.” And he has unilaterally appointed himself as the sole judge of what constitutes free and fair, it goes without saying. “Mail-in ballots are prone to fraud,” are are told. But here’s a real world assessment, for a change, of the actual danger to mail-in ballots, and it’s as ludicrous as you suspected. Philip Bump, Washington Post:

It is, of course, true that voter fraud happens. It is also true that gang violence happens. It is not true, though, that voter fraud happens rampantly, affecting the results of elections, any more than it is true that gang violence poses a dire and immediate threat to most Americans. The analogy I like to use is car theft. Trump is pointing to a few stolen cars and alleging that there is necessarily a national ring of car thieves which is stealing hundreds of thousands of vehicles and putting the entire idea of private car ownership at risk.

Or, really, he and McEnany are pointing to the existence of crowbars as an argument in support of the idea that this national ring of car thieves exists. McEnany’s claims about fraud in Nevada derive entirely from her assertions that sending ballots to voters will facilitate fraud, not that fraud actually happens. Last week, we made a quiz aimed at helping the president’s team to differentiate between actual voter fraud and fraud-like things that they’re blowing out of proportion. It seems she has not yet taken it.

Trump “believes that voter fraud is real, in line with what we see all across the country, particularly with mail-in ballots which are prone to fraud,” McEnany said. If he actually believes this — a question in its own right — he’s foolish to do so. We don’t see wide-scale fraud all over the country, any more than we see wide-scale auto theft all over the country. Mail-in ballots are more prone to fraud than in-person voting (the focus of Trump’s hand-wringing in Pennsylvania in 2016), but in the same sense that people who leave their jewelry on nightstands are more prone to having it stolen than those who put it in their sock drawer: Neither happens very often.

The bottom line is that Trump wants to have an out on November 3 and he doesn’t care how big a lie he needs to tell in order to not look bad. He is constitutionally incapable of admitting failure, so he needs to cobble together a conspiracy theory about voter fraud. And his enablers, McEnany and who knows who else in the GOP will support him in this. It is simply easier for Trump — and them — to attack our institutions than it is to deal with defeat. I never thought I would see an iteration of the Republican party so lacking in character as the one that we deal with today.

This is not democracy. This is not America. This is Trumpism, aided and abetted by a corrupt GOP. Trump is only worried about saving face. We need to be worried about saving America’s ass.

  1. Himself is going to fill out a vote-by-mail ballot and then hand it to someone else to deliver – that’s called “ballot harvesting” by the GOP-T and they’re against it, just like they’re against VBM.
    Apparently IOKIYAR.

  2. His constant preoccupation with not looking bad baffles me because his efforts always have the opposite effect and make him look worse.

    • It’s called the bastard child of the evil union of arrogance & stupidity. Thank God he’s his worst enemy. Can u imagine where we would be if he was actually as skilled as his Russian master?

    • I saw a stat on actual fraud, not just mail-in.
IIRC it was something like 0.00006%
Not enough to be more than a blip in the overall count.
The Electoral College has done far more to circumvent the will of We the People.

  3. And IF voter fraud is committed, it’s usually Republicans doing it. judging by the history of ACTUAL voter fraud committed so far.

    • Any organized attack on our mail system at the scale needed to actually affect the flow of voter’s country-wide filed votes would show a glaring spotlight on the team of offenders, and immediately throw those ferrets on the mercy of the public’s wrath, pitchforks, tar and feathers …

Oh wait, what’s the name of that guy throwing out beautiful blue mailing boxes, and yes incredibly expensive sorting machinery, basically, the core of our wonderful postal system, bought and paid for by OUR taxes, and on the federal list of properties and slowing down the system, killing jobs, then claiming his artificial destruction is eliminating the need for the post offices in your town and neighborhood !!
How can this Trump duo do SO MUCH damage and NOT fall under Congressional outrage and announcing stop all damage — restoration process should be paid by the criminal himself, after all, he is NOT the president and has billions of dollars of his own to pay for it …

Adam Schiff has by now dug up all the links and probably the secret meeting details between these criminals against our Country’s safety and protected rights … between receiving medications, official paperwork for people’s local and national government responsibilities and credit systems, this IS top level criminal activity, ACTUAL CONSPIRACY, requiring millions of dollars in fines, limited time to restore the sorting systems to their full capacity or hiring multiple shifts of necessary manual workers to replace the machines’ output … these conflicted idiots need to be locked into a large warehouse of angry badgers on the hunt/attack … at least 25-life prison terms with no chance for parole …

Damn these people … FUCK TRUMP … send him to a long term bunker, (for his own safety), where if he’s hungry he can push a little lever and flash frozen whoppers, will pop out of microwave oven, plenty of water from the streams just below the Koch Brother’s paper plants in MN …

  4. Whether he believes it or not is beside the point.
He just has to keep repeating it loudly and often.
The mouth-breathers who follow him will lap it up.
For Sideshow Don it’s all just an episode of “Apprentice; West Wing”.
