This was not one of his better statements. Using religion as an impetus to something is not anything close to what a ‘president’ should be doing. We have freedom of religion. We also have a separation of church and state. Remember when he had a path cleared to a church just so he could have a photo op holding a bible? Well, here’s the next stage. President Donald Trump cursed as he told Republicans to pass a restrictive voter identification bill “for Jesus.” During a Monday event in Memphis, the president said he was tying Department of Homeland Security funding to the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require a passport or birth certificate to register to vote.

That “act” needs to be taken out and burned. It’s going to disenfranchise a whole bunch of people, not “just immigrants”. There are a number of reasons US citizens might not have either one of those. For example, if you’ve never been out of the country, why would you need a passport? I went to a wedding up in Canada, and all I needed was my license. Of course, that was BT, Before Trump, so it’s likely very different now.

“So, I’m tying Homeland Security into voter identification with picture and proof of citizenship in order to vote,” he explained. “So, it should be part of the Homeland Security bill. And I’m requesting that the Republican senators do that immediately.”

There’s an incredible amount of pushback against that act. It would not surprise me to find out Republicans don’t want the damn thing, either. It’s going to wreak havoc with voting, and a lot of them have midterms coming up. People won’t forget who voted for this thing. With any luck, please, please, please, don’t let it pass. Ever. I’m not sure it could be rolled back.

“You don’t have to take a fast vote,” he added. “Don’t worry about Easter going home. Make this one for Jesus, okay? Make this one for Jesus. That’s what I tell them. That would be a damn good thing.” “The most important part of Homeland Security is voter ID and proof of citizenship. Nobody can vote in Homeland Security without a voter ID or proof of citizenship. And you can’t have Homeland Security without voter ID or proof of citizenship. So, we’re tying them together.”

Well, he thinks he is. *If* this gets passed, people are going to remember it at midterms and in 2028. I firmly believe we *will* have midterms, and that means Doofus Donnie is going to be in trouble. People are fleeing his sinking ship. This is a big one, and anyone who votes for it is going to be in trouble, midterms or not. Wake up and smell the coffee, folks.
