Donald Trump has spent a lifetime threatening lawsuits. Usually he backs down. He TACOs when he’s facing Discovery as in being deposed under oath and/or providing documentation. But sometimes he’s followed through, even as President. Among his current lawsuits of course is one against the IRS because an employee leaked some of his tax returns. Trump sued for $10 billion and now says he can just award it to himself! It gets worse.
Let’s start with some basics as reported by The Daily Beast. Trump is claiming he’s got the right to transfer as much government/taxpayer money as he likes into his own accounts. I did you not. The way Trump sees it he’s been wronged over and over, in large part one assumes because although he expended great effort into becoming a public figure he wound up in politics. Ergo, we the people owe him. Bigly:
When asked by a reporter on Saturday evening what it was like to be on both sides of a lawsuit, Trump, 79, responded that “no one would care” if he awarded himself taxpayer funds for his own hand-selected “charities.”
As a private citizen and as president, Trump has launched multiple lawsuits against the U.S. government. He is now in charge of them and is seeking damages of more than $10 billion.
“I have to work out some kind of a settlement,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “I’m supposed to work out a settlement with myself.”
“I think what we’ll do is do something for charity. We’re thinking about doing something for charity, where I’ll give money to charity,” he continued.
“We can make it a sensational amount, and nobody would care because it’s going to go to numerous, very good charities,” the president said.
Wow. I hardly know where to begin. No one would care if he funneled money to his ‘hand selected’ charities which in practice would be to himself? You know what, if for example he tried to get away with giving himself $10 million instead of BILLION for the IRS thing most of his MAGAs probably wouldn’t care. Ten BILLION however, since the individual who leaked a few years of tax returns has been caught and punished is something they might not be okay with. Remember, going back generations nominees for President have voluntarily released years, even decades of their tax returns. Trump promised to do so but only dumbass MAGAs thought he actually would.
We’ve gotten some, in part from civil litigation with his family that Trump had provided some years of tax returns in discover which sat unopened and unnoticed for years. It didn’t make him look good. Neither do the few years released due to the leaker that are from a few years when Trump got into elective politics. Already upset about the current cost of living, and an ever so slowly dawning realization that for all his promises starting over ten years ago Trump and his family have made out like bandits and if anything, things are worse off for them now! THEY have been paying taxes and HE hasn’t. It’s that simple.
Helping himself to $10 Billion of taxpayer money over a handful of tax returns ANY other Presidential candidate would have (and has) release voluntarily won’t play so well. Neither I predict (again, I’m talking about a lot of MAGAs) Trump ‘negotiating with himself’ to give himself a “sensational amount” of money. Don’t forget he’s got multiple lawsuits going. Oh, he’s claiming it will go to ‘charities’ but since he’ll control the charities we all know it would go to Trump in the end. Once upon a time MAGAs would shut down at any suggestion Trump charities were a scam.
As the linked article notes, he can’t actually transfer money into one because it no longer exists. He was forced to shut it down, and if memory serves pay a financial penalty for the scam. Not to worry though because he’s got other charities/scams money could be rooted to. Worse, thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts by making any transfer an “Official Act” Trump would be off the hook when it comes to being criminally charged with fraud. Hell, he might not even have to pay it back if a civil action determined he didn’t have the right to give himself that money. I’m not a lawyer so I hope those who are will weigh in on that question.
I could go off on a batshit insane, profane rant for the rest of the afternoon about this, but will just suggest you read the linked article for more details on why Trump thinks he might get away with this and the ‘charities’ he’d funnel the money to. What I hope is that given the Epstein and ICE problem he’s created it’s just him choosing to be outrageous. Setting off a WMD where the D stands for Distraction. Still, people should know what he’s saying, and file it away in their brain housing group just in case Trump up and tries to do it.
