In his weekly newsletter to his subscribers this week Tucker Carlson asked “How come so few conservatives are viewing this story through a human lens?” Huh? Tucker Carlson? No, you haven’t been secretly re-directed to an appalling ‘in bad taste’ piece in The Onion. Carlson’s post laments how ‘desensitized’ people have become.  Mark this moment because for once I actually agree with Tucker Carlson. Too many people HAVE become desensitized. Too many people HAVE lost touch with their basic humanity. And Tucker Carlson is for once including fellow conservatives in his ‘too many people’ criticism

When Tucker Carlson of all people calls out conservatives, suggests they show some damn compassion in the face of a tragedy where a ‘liberal’ is shot and killed we are truly in uncharted territory. Perhaps he’ll soon walk it back. Or wait a while before taking Renee Nicole Good to task over her political views. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens a few weeks down the road. But for now what he’s saying is exactly what a lot more conservatives with platforms SHOULD be saying.

It really feels like a through the looking glass moment. With the looking glass being on the back end of the Twilight Zone at the far edge of The Outer Limits. Tucker Freaking Carlson calling for some damned compassion for Ms. Good?  Yet according to Mediaite that’s exactly what he’s done. Carlson points out that there were folks on our side who were openly gleeful when Charlie Kirk was murdered.

Look, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not sorry he’s no longer out there spreading his whitewashed version of bigotry and hatred. I DO however want to make clear I despise the reason. How he was silenced by an assassin’s bullet. The one thing I can credit him for is that while I strongly disagreed with his views he was about ARGUING them with others willing to debate him. NOT advocating violence. From what I can tell he was a ‘jaw jaw jaw instead of war war war’ type of person.

However there were folks on our side, not any of our leaders who made a lot of awful comments and should be ashamed of themselves for doing so. That’s what Tucker points out and he’s not  happy his fellow conservatives didn’t seize the chance to react in a more positive way:

“Say, when something similar, like the killing of Charlie Kirk, happens on the other side, did many on the left celebrate because they thought his political positions were wrong? We have a guess,” the post reads. “Violence around the world is desensitizing Americans to violence at home.”

“The 37-year-old was an American citizen and reportedly the mother of a kindergarten-aged child. Did we disagree with her views on immigration? Probably. But that shouldn’t matter,” Carlson’s newsletter reads. “Her death is a tragedy, regardless of her partisan affiliations, ideological beliefs, or who pulled the trigger. A woman was shot in the face.”

I’d be more impressed with Carlson if he’d have noted that while some progressives were way out of line with comments about Kirk’s murder none of our leaders were. In fact our leaders were telling those assholes to shut up and recognize that Kirk was a husband and father with loved ones who were devastated by what had happened. In THIS case GOPers, with their leaders (starting with Trump) are openly attacking Ms. Good. TRASHING her. They say she’s a ‘Domestic Terrorist’ who ‘ran over agents’ with her vehicle and in effect deserved to die.

I can’t help but wonder if the last line in that part I blocked out above, ‘A woman was shot in the face’ was a not so subtle dig at ICE Barbie Kristi Noem.  Anyway even though Carlson’s criticism pulled some punches it still was a pretty hard punch from where I sit. Sometimes we should be grateful for a plain meal and not complain it wasn’t a prime rib dinner. I for one will take what I can get most of the time and this includes this.

Still, part of me can’t help but wonder if someone slipped a tube under my door and pumped in a gas filled with some hallucinogen. I’m mean come on! Tucker Carlson says show some goddamned compassion?  Color me officially weirded out.

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. As far as I’m aware, no one knows Renee Good’s political views, who she voted for or if she voted at all. She wasn’t part of a protest; she was dropping off her child at kindergarten. How anyone on the right can infer her political views from that is beyond me.
