Stephen Miller is normally obnoxious but in this clip he sounds positively delusional. The topic under discussion with Jake Tapper is the acquistion of Greenland. Miller makes it sound like NATO will just roll over and allow one member nation to invade and seize the territory of another member nation like it was nothing. The PM of Denmark has made her position abundantly clear, nobody is going to simply take Danish territory. But Miller believes differently.
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATOT: So force is on the table?M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland
Anyone want to bet on whether the EU will defend Greenland? I say yes.

Of course it will. And Canada will too

Canada can destroy pipelines and powerlines feeding oil, nat gas, & electricity into US.Realistically, wouldn’t bring US to its knees but cost of energy to US consumers would jump up making the affordability issue an festering sore with electorate questioning what benefit Greenland was to them.

And there would be sanctions from other nations as well. This is sheer folderal, what Miller is spewing, but don’t expect it to stop. This is the Donroe Doctrine, the fantasy, and it includes Greenland, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and I have heard that Iran is part of the fantasy now as well. Iran would be quite the far flung U.S. colony in this imperialist delusion.
I never thought WWIII would consist of the United States versus Greenland, Canada, Denmark, Iceland (most probably) and all the NATO states but hey, this is what’s being threatened. Let’s take it seriously.

The real irony is that, during the Cold War, Greenland *was* a vitally important part of America’s defense program (we even had a couple of MAJOR military bases there–with Denmark’s FULL cooperation and assistance) because it could be a “first response” against any Soviet military (especially potential nuclear) strikes. The Soviets knew if they launched aircraft or missiles at the US, the US had the capability of hitting Moscow and other major Soviet sites (including the Soviets’ vaunted Arctic naval facilities) so the deterrence kept everyone safe and sane.
But now? What country is such a threat to “our security” that Greenland is so important to current global politics? Russia? The country whose President basically OWNS Drumpf? China and North Korea? Neither of those countries would need to use a “cross over Greenland” strategy (unless they were going for “distract the Americans” strategy by taking what is the absolute longest possible route for a military strike–in which case, there wouldn’t be much of a “surprise” for anyone). Drumpf is an absolute idiot who needs to be stuck in a nursing home rather than occupying the White House.
FAFO…..
Yes, FAFO. On steroids! I don’t think Americans get yet how furious its once-allies are, and how dangerous the situation is. I do think NATO is headed for a shake-down and the US will be given an ultimatum. Cut the threats or pack your bags.
1984 has East Asia, Eurasia and Oceania. Seems to me T wants something like Americania, East Asia and Eurasia. Yet, with openness and cooperation, he could have ownership/power and influence from the Aleutians to the Tatras and a bit beyond (the Black Sea) with a few honorable and negligible cost deals (Greenland). Since, with Venezuela and “Russian” tankers he seems prepared to tweak Putin’s nose, why not go for the KO with Ukraine? Doesn’t project enough manliness, too slow and sensible or Kompromat?
I certainly hope we’ll put up determined resistance – Europe including UK, and Canada. But even if it were just Denmark, the following logic would apply.
Would US troops fire at fellow NATO personnel? They’d have been discussing (& so would the media) the idea that this would constitute an illegal order. Maybe top brass would have ‘ruled’ on this (acquiesced? resigned en masse?) but they’d at least be tentative at first. The defenders, OTOH, would be on solid legal ground, repelling invaders.
Anyway, if battles do break out, we should defend – specifically including with F-35s fighter jets, as well as other aircraft. Denmark (and UK and others) have F-35s. This will force the issue as to whether Lockheed Martin will continue to supply codes for the communication protocols, and other support as per contract, or only to America.
Either way, Lockheed Martin are screwed. If they (are forced to) cut European F-35s off, so using them will gradually become more difficult, their export market collapses overnight, as they can’t be trusted. If they do keep European F-35s up-to-date, the Trump administration will ensure their domestic market collapses. (At least until a saner administration takes over.)
So L-M execs must be desperate the issue never gets tested. And going forward, as more defence equipment becomes more computer-dependent, the same will apply for all defence contractors. They won’t want to pass up on export orders, without which, in any case, they will raise their prices for the US.
