This is the first day of G7 and it is hardly off to a rousing start. But it is off to a predictable one. Donald Trump, ego bruised from his flopped *perade* is in the Canadian Rockies and all he can do is bitch — about Russia not being part of the gathering, about Biden letting criminals into the country, so on and so forth. Mark Carney has no stomach for this. He just wants to get down to business. Lots of luck with that. Trump is there to grandstand and spout talking points. That’s all he’s got to offer. If Carney didn’t cut him off, he would have talked about the autopen. Want to bet?

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cut off questioning to President Donald Trump, taking back a few minutes of time from reporters ahead of the start of the G7 summit.

Trump answered several questions about Russia’s dismissal from what was previously known as the G8 under former President Barack Obama and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership, as well as the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The last question Trump responded to focused on a social media post of his in which he called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expand efforts to detain and deport illegal immigrants in America’s largest cities, such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

“Biden allowed 21 million people to come into our country,” Trump said. “The vast numbers of those people and murderers, killers, people from gangs, people from jails, they emptied their jails out into the U.S. Most of those people are in the cities, all blue cities, all Democrat-run cities, and they think they’re going to use them to vote. It’s not going to happen.”

It’s likely that Trump was relieved that Carney cut him off because he has nothing to say and it probably gets tiresome even for him to just stand up there and repeat himself. For the rest of us it is maddening.

Trump had reminded reporters that the G7 summit used to be the G8 until Obama and Trudeau pushed out Russia. Russia’s membership was suspended following the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

“That was a mistake because I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia, and you wouldn’t have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago,” Trump told reporters. “But it didn’t work out that way.”

“It was a mistake in that you spend so much time talking about Russia. He’s no longer at the table, so it makes life more complicated,” Trump said of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “But you wouldn’t have had the war. And, other than that, I think we’re going to accomplish a lot, and I expect to, and I think our primary focus would be trade and trade with Canada, and I’m sure we can work something out.”

When asked what was holding up a trade deal with Canada, Trump told reporters, “I’m a tariff person, I’ve always been a tariff person.” He said Carney “has a more complex idea, but also very good,” looking forward to negotiations during the summit.

Carney’s “complex idea” is doable whereas Trump’s fantasy that a tariff is a tax is purely that, a fantasy. You can tell by Carney’s tone that he’s not in the mood to screw around with Trump. Carney is a brilliant man and a seaoned politician and I’m sure he doesn’t understand this populist shitshow the U.S. has opted for any more than we do.

Trump was also asked if the U.S. would become militarily involved in the Iran/Israel conflict and he said, “I don’t want to talk about that.” Um…Donald? WTF do you think your job is? It is precisely to talk about that very thing and similar things. Oh, right, we forget: you only ran to stay out of prison, not to do the actual job. Got it. Everybody gets it.

I apologize to Canada and the rest of the world that we have this monumentally stupid emeffer in office.

  1. Russia should never have been part of the group to begin with. It was the G7 because it was the world’s biggest/most powerful economies. Russia, for all its perceived military might (which turned out not to be as advertised) was too small and too limited. Yes, they were a large exporter of grain but so was China and our own country and it turns out other countries were quite capable of taking up the slack when Trump fucked over American agriculture in his first term. Energy wise western Europe was their customer and Russia couldn’t afford to turn off the gas, at least for very long. Now, Europe doesn’t need them at all and the speed with which they replaces Russian energy after the invasion of Ukraine shows they always knew they could. And Russia knew it too. Europe didn’t want to have to go through the trouble but like I said knew they could and in less than a year would be fine. And Russia knew it.

So there should have been no G8 in the first place because Russia didn’t deserve a seat at the table. CALIFORNIA, the state had and still has a far larger and more diverse economy than Russia EVER has. Right now there’s is the fourth largest economy in the freaking world. Yet they don’t get a seat at the table and have to rely on the orange painted buffoon Trump to stand up for them. Russia? They are so far down the list it’s laughable to think of them being part of the current goings on. Without China having hooked up an extension cord the Russian economy would have long ago collapsed. And China can yank the plug out anytime if wants to.

I love that Carney cut short Trumpty’s time for taking questions. A true, ‘you didn’t behave so go to the corner’ moment in front of the world’s media. They already know what a mess we’ve become so it’s not like Trump being humiliated into silence was news. The problem of course is it further damages us in the world’s eyes. The U.S. we grew up in that was the unquestioned leader of the free world is gone. It has been for a while. This is just another painful reminder both to us and to the worlds that we are no longer “THE’ U.S. that could be counted on to see the world through any crisis.
