The country is long past the point at which we lightly laughed aside Trumpian aspirations for an American Empire, one land with Greenland, the Panama Canal, and even Canada, fully enveloped all together. (But why not Mexico? Has anyone even asked?) It is fully evident that at least Donald Trump – if not other members of the administration, intends to go well beyond anything that could have been previously conceived. It is thus incumbent to watch every move as it pertains to key figures who may influence the course of events. To that end, Greenland’s former Prime Minister – the masterfully monikered Mute Egede, tells us that an American delegation is planning to visit Greenland, one that includes Second Lady Usha Vance, and its purpose and timing is aggressive in appearance, unwanted in utility.
From a new report in Kendalville Press:
Greenland’s prime minister, Mute Egede, accused Washington on Monday of interfering in its political affairs by sending a US delegation to the Danish territory, which is coveted by US President Donald Trump. Egede said US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz would visit Greenland this week, along with Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance. Greenlandic media reports said the delegation also included US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, a former mining executive.
Sending a U.S. delegation overseas – especially one that includes the National Security Adviser, a cabinet member, and the Second Lady – isn’t often characterized as an “aggressive” foreign policy move, but in this context, with Greenland being so tiny, Trump so overt, and the move so open, this is highly aggressive, perhaps landing just short of “hostile.” If you are Greenlandic right now, having heard President Donald Trump covet taking over your island “One way or another,” how would you perceive having the Vice President’s wife and two cabinet-level people waiting at the airport? You have been taken over, or will be – or else why are they even there? To explore Greenland’s interest?
Whatever it might be, Egede senses it and is openly guarded – calling the U.S. out even before welcoming the delegation:
Speaking to Greenlandic daily Sermitiaq, Egede said the “only purpose of the visit was a demonstration of power, and the signal should not be misunderstood… It should be said clearly that our integrity and democracy must be respected without foreign interference,” Egede said in a post on Facebook.
Well, it most certainly is a demonstration of power but that isn’t the only purpose in finding themselves in Nuuk. (Get to know the local geography before things blow up so we at least appear respectful and interested in the territory we are absorbing.) Yes, we send signals one way but are also there to pick up the opposite.
The National Security Adviser may be there to evaluate just how much Greenland may be willing to give the us short of annexation. If we are considering forcibly joining another country that wants little to do with us, it is probably not a bad idea to at least first ask if they are prepared to give us whatever we want anyway. If the Greenlandic people are just fine allowing us to build a massive “Joint Base Nuuk” staffed by 45,000 Americans – then why annex the nation? Of course, such a base would nearly double Greenland’s population. Be that as it may, Ugede smells a rat:
He added that the US delegation’s visit “cannot be seen as just a private visit”. “(Waltz) is Trump’s confidant and closest advisor, and his presence in Greenland alone will certainly make the Americans believe in Trump’s mission, and the pressure will increase after the visit,” Egede told Sermitsiaq.
Labeling the matter a “private visit” is almost as offensive as the idea that we will simply annex Greenland. Unless Usha Vance is actually having a private affair with National Security Advisor Waltz, there is no reason for them to fly away on some “private trip” – no, this one comes cameras in tow, message all clear. “We are landing here because we can. You cannot stop us. Now talk to us nicely while we continue thinking about how to best get what we need.”
Yes, one can make light of any Second Lady visit to nearly any place. It is not as though she is there to make major news as a major international power player. But Americans must now consider whether to go along with possibly being seen as the international bully. This looks to be a highly aggressive move. Greenland is a nation with about 50,000 people. Why is the Second Lady, the National Security Adviser, and the Commerce Department landing on their doorstep? We were not invited there. Indeed, the trip doesn’t seem to involve any coordinated planning and seems to be happening on American terms without the input of the Greenlandic government. The visit looks hostile.
Greenlanders are highly skeptical of American aspirations. They have been clear in telling us that they want little to do with this. Yet we send a few officials over – not high-ranking enough to really matter, only high enough that they cannot be ignored – without asking, without any pressing agenda, the point looks to be a means to add more American shoes on the ground in Greenland… preferable to boots on the ground, for now.
Watch this dynamic. Similar to and running parallel to the situation in Canada, the more reports one reads, the more aggressive developments, the more we strain otherwise-stable international relations, it all happens as one finally appreciates that Donald Trump really does want to add Greenland and Canada to the American “map.” The only remaining variable is how far he might be willing to go. Is Trump willing to burn former NATO allies – making them adversaries, like Canada – in pursuit of the Greenlandic Great White Whale?
We don’t know. We only know that we won’t get a second chance to note moves such as this, sending the Second Lady in with key personnel. Short of a military exercise, this might be as aggressive an act as can be done diplomatically. Worth watching.

Friends, we are struggling to make ends meet. It’s not just us, it’s industry wide. There are star hosts being bumped on MSNBC as we speak. (Joy Reid and Alex Wagner) So if you can afford a small donation or a monthly subscription, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ursula

Is anybody from the Greenland government meeting them, or are they all going to hole up at the Nuuk Super 8 (the one with the pool and hot tub) and order from Uber Eats for a week and then go home?? Strange! And what interest could Second Lady Vance possibly have, unless it’s to teach the Greenlander women how to stay married to an a%%hat like her husband until he’s done wrecking our country. He’s hopefully not going to have a crack at Greenland if they and Denmark and the rest of NATO have anything to say about it!
Greeenland should just deny them entry. Show Trump that he isn’t welcome, and neither is Vance and his beard.
I can think of more than one reason Trumpty hasn’t talked about annexing/taking over Mexico.
First and most Mexico’s citizens aren’t white people. They are “brown” and for Trumpty that simply won’t do. No, he wants immigrants only from “white” countries (i.e. Scandanavian ones) or white Europeans. Canada and Greenland are mostly white people too. Panama, like Mexico is filled with “brown” citizens but it’s not nearly so large and it’s farther away.
Another reason is that Trumpty, like so many other American business folks do the ‘wink and nod’ to immigration status when it comes to hiring workers, especially domestic workers, grounds/lanscaping folks, people to work in food processing plants with chicken and beef (if you’ve never been in one it’s damned tough work) and so on. If they are all of a sudden citizens then the leverage business owners have over them or their friends/family r.e. reporting them to ICE for deportation goes away. They’ll have to pay more for labor.
Finally, for decades conservatives have with brutal effectiveness used “illegal immigration” as a campaign tool. Making Mexico an American state or even Territory takes that off the table. Remember a year ago how a bi-partisan deal had been worked out between the Biden administration and Congress that even most of the most conservative Republicans were on board with? Trump was FURIOUS. He WANTED to campaign on “illegal immigration” and the deal would have done much to resolve matters, and also address other issues like drug smuggling with particular emphasis on fentanyl. So he told Republicans to kill the legislation and to appease him they did just that. The collapse of the deal had a bonus due to the timing – it robbed Biden of a big legislative/policy win. Had the deal been signed into law it’s something that would have quelled much, if not most of the behind the scenes backstabbing of Biden. Instead it led to open questioning of Biden’s leadership from prominent Democrats and donors. Trumpy got a “twofer” out of the whole thing.
So as I’ve said there are multiple reasons for Mexico not being on Trump’s “acquisition list” but I still think the #1 reason by far is he’s a stone-cold fucking racist and not about to add a huge land mass filed with so many NON-WHITE people to the ranks of U.S. citizens.
Trump and GOP never go after all the corporate farmers and businesses who hire undocumented employees. The support them paying their laborers a low salary and just go after the poor immigrants.
So will these assholes arrive aboard Air Force Two or some other official US taxpayer-funded conveyance? And will they be expecting some sort of red carpet/bathmat upon arrival? I hope and trust that the unwelcoming Greenlanders will process them through the usual tourist bureaucracy in the airport, shuffle them off to the nearby Holiday Inn or equivalent (where their room prices just quadrupled) and wish them a nice weekend. All govt officials will all be too busy to meet them, of course, doing actual government work. Local taxis might be available unless they’re already booked by actual tourists. Their passports will be held at customs until they leave. And they’ll be notified that any future American visitors will require visas.
Greenland and Canada are mostly white while Mexico is filled with Scary Brown People.
Am I the only one who thinks Trump would have his own drug cartel if he could get away with it?
