The last person I recall Trump thinking was too crazy to work with was Sydney Powell. Trump wouldn’t actually appoint Powell to be special counsel or White House counsel, but he did appoint Patel to run the FBI. However, Powell would not have required a Senate confirmation and Patel does. So Trump is looking for a couple of things with the Patel nomination: 1. Political theater and 2. The grifting opportunity that political theater provides. Think I’m joking? Look at the emails going out on Pete Hegseth’s behalf. This is from Charlie Sykes newsletter.
I received a text message urging me to: SAVE PETE: PLEASE SAVE PETE HEGSETH!
The plea for cash warns that “The Woke Mob will do whatever they can to REMOVE Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense from President Trump’s Cabinet.”
And then it goes on to make this world-historic claim:
If Pete is gone we can say GOODBYE to America as we know it.
Perfect. Chef’s kiss perfect.

But, wait there’s more. The fund-raising note says “Your contribution will benefit God, Family, and Country PAC.” Near the bottom, in the smaller print, there appears this box…. Which is pre-checked… committing Hegseth fans to “monthly recurring donations.”

Exit take: Look elsewhere for expressions of sympathy for the dupes who actually think that if the randy Pete is gone, “we can say GOODBYE to America as we know it.”
Justice, we think, is served.
If these people are stupid enough to go along with this, and apparently they are, then they deserve to be broke and live in a country with a broken government. Unfortunately, we are here right beside them.
Back to Patel and fear, here is Sykes’ two cents worth:
The idea that a fanatic like Kash Patel will run the FBI is genuinely scary. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Other presidents (with mixed success) may have tried to sell hope or unity; they’ve promised the return of happy days; called the nation to higher purpose; even made pleas to the better angels of our nature.
Trump is selling fear.

Instilling fear is the point of Trump’s (ill-fated) appointment of Matt Gaetz as AG and of Patel to run FBI. It’s the message that Trump’s best-buddy-cum-co-president, Elon Musk sends out in a steady stream on social media: Be afraid. We are coming after you. We are the law now.
Now let me speak personally and directly to this fear issue: Elon Musk is following PolitiZoom on Bluesky. Hand to God, I wouldn’t lie to you about something like that. If you go over there, we just opened a new account and we have 80 followers. One of them is Elon Musk.
You tell me. Is he there as a fan of our work? I seriously doubt that. Is he there to do a Big Brother number, “I’m watching you?” That’s my best idea at this moment. If you have any others, let me know.

And you see on the bottom, the two “likes” that was from this troll and one of her buddies. I am gobsmacked. Clearly I was being snide but I guess that that was not apparent. I post this here to show you that these people are two things: Uber agressive and abjectly stupid. I love it where she says “opinion-laden hit piece” when it’s clearly marked Opinion in black and white. They don’t know when you’re telling them to get fucked as long as you sound polite doing it. They take that as capitulation and don’t have the mental gears to realize that they’ve been insulted, only they can’t recognize insult unless it is couched in vitriolic and combative terms.
So fear and intimidation are the watchwords here and I guess we’re going to see how it plays out in the real world. Again, fully half of the country is opposed to this so I don’t see this shitshow lasting forever. I see things turning around in 2026 and with a vengeance.
The next two years are Trump’s golden era, if he can manipulate the House and Senate and that remains to be seen with the wafer thin margins he’s got.
Never forget two things: Trump has two big losses right out of the gate: One, he didn’t get Rick Scott as Majority Leader, he got John Thune and two, Matt Gaetz washed out of not only the AG nomination but out of Congress and out of politics in less than a Scaramucci.
These are not small things and they will not be the only things.
FDR and JFK had it right, there is nothing to fear but fear itself.
