It always seems as though Republicans have full faith in the legitimacy of elections every single time they remain ahead and the moment that they fall behind it becomes suspect such that causes a loss of faith in elections. There aren’t any claims in the media about any significant number of Democrats doubt the presidential – or Senate losses in the least. Elections are legitimate until proven otherwise, win or lose. It is that simple.”
The latest example involves John Duarte the Republican incumbent in the race for a House seat in the Central Valley of California and Marjorie Taylor-Greene. – the one saying that in falling behind the whole race is rigged. As seen below, she states:
“Congressman John Duarte was winning but after 22 days of counting ballots he is now losing by 105 votes,” Greene fumed on X. “Democrats are stealing another House seat! Elections nationwide should be one day, paper ballots, and require proof of citizenship with ID!!”

Again, the amazing thing is that this happens in the face of a Democratic loss across the board in 2024. We even heard that President Biden lost a lot of votes in New York – a state in which it is easier to vote and if there was going to be cheating, wouldn’t Democrats at least cover the expected margin in those places it’s easiest? Pennsylvania is the ultimate case in which we presumed the Senate and Presidential race to be legitimate. Indeed, Trump won all seven contested states and Democrats haven’t claimed any cheating occurred at all.
In spite of the evidence that elections are legitimate and Democrats can take losses, the Republicans claim it occurs in any race in which they are on the losing side. There is also significant evidence that not only does Florida catch people who have only voted twice, and someone accused of voting in two states, they haven’t managed to catch someone putting in a batch of illegitimate votes, nor anyone counting wrongly in favor of one candidate. Puzzling. Not that MTG was the only Republican expressing doubts – some in red got downright crude, to put it with extreme understatement:
“Democrats need to go to prison for this. We can’t have rampant cheating on elections and have a civil society.”

Then it got really bad and in the same way that it is awful that this person makes this assumption, it’s probably just as bad to just assume that this represents a significant number of Trump voters. The point is doubting the legitimacy:
“F— these welfare leeches. Pieces of s—.”

And then there was one that was just weird and it is probably best to post it given this is about accusations that Democrats “rig” elections. Here is the tweet and then look below as to why this one sort of indicates a bit of a problem:
“Adam Gray (D) overtakes Rep. Duarte (R) by 105 votes in California-13. Pelosi’s daughter is ‘curing ballots.'”

Okay. First, yes – Nancy Pelosi’s daughter Christine Pelosi’s is, in fact, curing ballots. But she is doing so out of her district and it may be that very few even know who she might be. On the other hand, both sides “cure” ballots and this is a race in which the Republican is an incumbent. Curing ballot is a process by which voters whose ballots were not counted due to some “very small technical mistake” like signing their ballot (These are mailed out) and thus make the vote eligible to be counted. Both sides do it.
The major issue is why on earth is Nancy Pelosi’s daughter advertising that this is “what she lives for,” and even more importantly – given both sides do this, what is she doing as part of the process anyway? Why give the Republicans anything to point to in order to doubt any legitimacy? It doesn’t matter in the least whether she actually somehow has more pull in the matter – it’s likely that it doesn’t have any impact. But why is she there at all?
The assumption is that these ballot curers only make the vote more legitimate until it is proven otherwise. Both sides are there. The Republican is the incumbent – this isn’t a total blue district. So it’s presumed legitimate. Why even throw something out that a tweet can reference as see above.
So there it is. Any election in which the Republican loses, even by thousands, it must be rigged. And yet the Democrats have a plate full of close loses – presidential loses in 2016 and a beat down in 2024 and no Democrat is seriously arguing that either Democratic loss isn’t legitimate.
No, the rather sudden doubts about legitimacy only started recently and are almost exclusively a Republican issue – unless they win.
God Bless: I can be reached at [email protected] and @JasonMiciak – now on Blue Sky – a good new alternative.

So true Jason. It only happens usually when a Republican starts losing.
EVERY Democrat who is behind in any election–even if they’re behind by a margin that’s almost impossible to overcome–needs to start challenging the results and refusing to accept the results, even if it takes weeks.
What’s good for the GOP is good for Democrats.
And, if the GOP starts complaining about “sore-loser Democrats” (and they will–GOP SOP), all the Democrat needs to do is say, “The GOP’s been doing it for a decade so I figure I’ve got as much right to do it as well.”
Right! let’s all act like spoiled toddlers, who throw fits and yell when they don’t get their way. I don’t think you’ll get a lot of takers for that idea.
