In pursuit of the all-important suburban women vote, Nikki Haley is back in the Donald Trump camp such that she has some cutting advice for the campaign. Distilled to its essence, Haley called on Trump and J.D. Vance to stop being jerks.Particularly, when they were discussing women.
She is probably on to something. The gender gap in the polls indicates that women favor Kamala Harris by a full 14 points. If Trump and Vance pick just four points off that gap they will run away with a victory. Of course, they can turn that gap into 20 if they aren’t more careful. Doing so would give Harris a victory that is almost in reach.
So exactly what nuanced and highly specialized advice did Haley have as to how to not be so off-putting? Haley doesn’t use the word “Jerks” exactly, but still:
“I think it’d because Donald Trump and JD Vance need to change the way they speak about women. You don’t need to call Kamala dumb. She didn’t get this far just by accident. She’s here, that’s what it is, she’s a prosecutor. You don’t need to go and talk about intelligence or looks or anything else… “
Good rule of thumb. Do not call the other candidate dumb. Say something more like, “How can such a smart person be so dumb?” It leaves the opponent scratching their heads a bit. Moving on, Haley has had more to say of late. According to Mediaite:
Haley made similar comments to Face the Nation anchor Margaret Brennan over the weekend, characterizing Vance’s attacks on “childless cat ladies” as “not helpful.” The former US ambassador to the United Nations has been urging Trump to “quit whining” and focus on issues for weeks.
Calling women voters “childless cat ladies” is more than not helpful, it’s about as stupid as calling a block of voters deplorable (Which was a major problem at the time, as many noted.) It is pretty simple, candidates should not put down voters of any stripe – let the media do that. A candidate who does so looks small, or in this case, like jerks.
Haley had this maxim down perfectly, stating: When you call even a Democrat[ic] woman dumb, Republican women get their backs up too.” Exactly. Calling a block of voters a name runs the very real risk of making one’s own voters think, “You are talking about one of my friends. I get to call him a jerk, you don’t.” This isn’t very complicated.
Plus, the cat-ladies thing was next level. It took imagination, this wasn’t something off the cuff. It matters because voters sense it as a pathetic grasp at a hot meme, ready-wrapped for “X” or Truth Social. Just call the candidates “weird” and see how that works.
It worked really well. Maybe Haley should have suggested something just as simple, yet cutting.
Because they do need to cut four points down somewhere.
