I screened Idiocracy last night, not having seen it since Donald Trump came on the scene. I’m going to tell you, it may have been farce when it was made but it’s not all that implausible if your living through the Trump era. Unfortunately, it plays out as more of a cautionary tale than an out and out laugh riot fantasy, which is how it played when I first saw it. Jon Voight is back on the scene and Trump happily posted this to Truth Social and Twitter. It’s like Idiocracy insofar as it’s so MAGA that it makes you wonder if it’s satire, but because it’s Jon Voight you know it’s on the level.

And the comments play out as self parody as well, except for the occasional liberal troll. Here’s a sampling.

All that’s standing between us and doom is Donald Trump, is the message. And there’s a lot of truth in that. Trump is doom. Project 2025 is doom. MAGA is doom. It’s ironic to me that Voight credibly played one of our greatest presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. But I guess that’s the actor’s craft, you can play somebody well even if the person that you really are is the antithesis of the character you’re playing.

Voight’s a good actor but there’s got to be a reason he’s estranged from both of his children. His son, actor James Haven, did speak to Voight again after the death of Haven’s mother in 2007 but prior to that hadn’t spoken to Voight in years. Angelina Jolie, his other child, doesn’t talk to him. I don’t know if this new MAGA obsession is helping family matters.

This is MAGA infotainment. Again, it would be great as comic relief if the stakes weren’t so high. There are people who believe these idiotic talking points. This is where right-wing media has created a monster. And the monster is here to stay. As long as conspiracy theory sells, depend upon it to be in the marketplace.

And I love the depiction of Barack Obama as the Dark Lord, the political Sith master, pulling all the strings in the background. Man, did he manage to freak these people out. I marvelled at that when Obama first rose to prominence and I continue to marvel.

    • Scott, all I could hear in Voight’s video was someone “squealin’ like a pig” and a banjo riff in the background!

  1. I too marvel at the power of Barack Obama’s election to terrify the white folks of the right wing. They called him The Anti-Christ, a man far more Christian than any of the charlatans
and nincompoops of the evangelical underworld. Obama epitomizes their deepest, most visceral fear: that people with skins of different colors could gain power over them. And Obama is frighteningly intelligent, too, adding another layer of dread for those who need to feel superior despite their obvious, unacknowledged inferiority. Kamala brings the same angst but with the additional punch of being female.

  2. voight who? I’m sorry but this guy barely gets any acting jobs (and the only decent one I can recall is Deliverance and didn’t he have “a real purty mouth”), you know, his actual wheel-house. Why in the f*ck would anyone listen to what he says about anything else but particularly the direction our nation should be headed? Why listen to this very silly “actor” (is he still? Really?) who wants an authoritarian, talibanesque country? Why listen to him when polling indicates the VAST MAJORITY of americans do not want ANYTHING from the proj. 1825 playbook. Now, while I would not depend upon polling for voter reactions to candidates, when it comes to other things, even politically-charged issues, it seems the folks answering the pollster’s questions don’t lie.

The fact that you’ve made a couple of movies, records, t.v. shows–your opinion means next to nothing. I pity the folks who actually get bamboozled by these entertainers because they are listening to someone who might know less than they do about issues, the body politic, etc. And it doesn’t matter which side of the political spectrum you are on–stfu and do what you’re paid to do.

  3. His daughter has nothing to do with him (Angelina Jolie.) He’s psycho. Wonder what he thinks of her adopting kids of color. He’s old. He’s nothing.

  4. lt’s past the Midnight Cowboy’s bedtime. I don’t know what happens to some of these actors brains when they get past a certain age, but Voight went weird about 30 years ago. Tossed a great career.

  5. Vance is the real life version of the “OW! MY BALLS! guy in Idiocracy. Voight is what would become of that character if he somehow survived to become a senior citizen
