Democrat’s Choice: Get Busy Winning (With Biden) Or Get Busy Losing

Democrats need to ignore the pundits and get their butts back to the work of re-electing Joe Biden. One bad night does not a candidate or Presidency make. Look at the WHOLE chessboard for chrissake! In the movie The Shawshank Redemption the main character Andy had fashioned as good a life behind bars as a wrongly convicted man could have. After suffering a particularly brutal blow he sat talking to his best friend about bad luck, and how his dream of living in some quiet spot on the Pacific wasn’t too much to ask for. His pal Red tells him it’s a pipe dream and he should be beating himself up. Andy replies that it comes down to a simple choice – get busy living, or get busy dying, and Andy undertakes an extraordinary effort to do the former. That friends is how I see things since last Thursday’s debate.

As the title indicates we can get busy winning with Joe Biden, or losing without him.

Since he sharted his way down his fake gold escalator in Trump Tower in 2016 to announce his candidacy Donald Trump has daily presented the country (and world) with a living example of a crazy old man.  And Trump was and still is old, only a few years younger than Biden. As a businessman Trump’s incompetence was well documented even back then. Then we had those disastrous four years and TRUMP has gone downhill since them. Trump had one skill, which was self-marketing. Presenting himself as some master tycoon and he had the media savvy and presence on camera (with enough careful editing on his TV show) to pull it off. Sadly, in the world of Presidential politics that superficial quality matters all too much. And becomes more so with each passing cycle due to a lazy media environment more concerned with ratings and profit than informing the public than was the case in the America I grew up in.

All the while Joe Biden had, and has continued to serve the public in the halls of Congress and then in the White House, first as a Vice-President who was a true partner to a great President, and then as President himself. Biden’s list of accomplishments, so many of which PUNDITS and even other politicians insisted couldn’t be done is one of the most impressive in Presidential history. Even after Republicans (barely) gained control of the House President Biden managed to push through some key legislation. At least before an alarmed Trump privately decreed (and has admitted doing so) that the GOP had to STOP doing anything, you know like governing the country that would make President Biden look good. More crazy (and cranky) old man crap from where I sit.

Regardless of what they say publicly most in the GOP who’ve dealt with President Biden have said he’s sharp, knows his stuff and is a tough negotiator when it comes to policy and legislation. Add in that his leadership on the issue of Ukraine and other foreign policy has been strong, and in the most trying of circumstances. He’s caught hell from both sides when it comes to Israel but he’s still pushing hard, and has managed to keep a very bad situation contained mostly to Gaza.  And yet the pundits would have everyone believe he’s “lost it.” WTF?

For years, YEARS there have been multiple stories from multiple major outlets questioning President Biden’s age and both mental and physical fitness for the job of President. All the while Biden’s done the job better than most have. Yes, Biden walks a little slower and more carefully, but he still gets out there and rides his bike. Trump drives his fat ass around in a freaking golf cart!  Biden is fit and trim. Trump is bloated and painted ghastly colors to hide what he really looks like. Trump spouts lies and talks (and types) nonsense every day, and increasingly comes up with new doozies. Lately he can’t let go of being on a sinking boat and having to choose between being eaten by a shark or being electrocuted by the boats battery! His rallies are so “out there” no outlet, even Fox will carry them.  When RWNJ outlets are hiding how crazy Trump has gotten, just how far HE has devolved you’re damned right I’m angry at the media’s relentless focus on Biden’s age and fitness!

It’s worth keeping in mind how much the news biz HATES covering the nominating conventions. You’d think that every four years they’d just STFU and give us a few days for each major Party to present their candidate and vision for the country without all the whining. But no, they want DRAMA. CONFLICT. They have wet-dreams of Democrat’s 1968 convention in Chicago with riots and fights both inside out outside the convention hall!  THAT is what they want. Trump’s conventions have been like his inauguration speech, the whole American carnage event. Knowing all along Trump would be the nominee news types know only hard-core Republicans and political junkies like me will tune in to the GOP convention this year.

Knowing what’s coming from the GOP convention their hope was that Democrats would provide some drama/ratings. And, as I’ve said they’ve spent years planting the seeds and hoping for a giant shot of Miracle Gro to make their “garden”, a brokered convention “pop” at just the right time. You know what I think? I think that just like Republicans hoped and PRAYED that Ruth Bader Ginsburg would die before Trump left office, people in the news business hoped and PRAYED that Biden would have an off night when last Thursday’s debate got booked. Unfortunately he obliged them and laid an egg.

A CNN article about this past weekend’s long planned Biden family gathering at Camp David discussed things like the family being upset with how Biden was prepared for the debate. That and other things supposedly have some calling for changes to high level campaign staff. But for me what jumped out was a note about Jill Biden:

The admiration and support that Biden’s family showed the president Sunday mirrored the first lady’s effusive public praise for her husband in recent days. She told Vogue on Sunday that the family will “not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president” and vowed to “continue the fight.”

Think about that for a minute. Think about all the campaign events you’d seen with this President. Has he looked worn out? Tired? Confused. Low Energy? And what about the State of the Union? Yes, Biden sometimes stumbles verbally as he’s suffered from a stutter his entire life. His mind works faster than his mouth sometimes. But day after day he’s dealing with his job and foreign leaders in the most trying of times and doing so effectively. But with the exception of those 90 minutes last Thursday he’s clearly alert and not just doing his job but doing so effectively. Oh how I wished I’d been able to hop over to Raleigh for his appearance near me on Friday. Joe Biden was just fine.  He will be going forward.

There’s never been a Cy Young Award winner (baseball’s best pitcher) who didn’t get hammered for a big loss at least once during an otherwise stellar season. Michael Jordan had bad games including at some bad times. Legendary CEO’s and movie executives have made boneheaded decisions and damned near every admired movie star has a role/movie they’re embarrassed by. And politicians including at the Presidential level have had “what the hell was wrong with them” debate performances. Even Obama.  It happens. Everyone moves on and gets back to work. It’s not easy but they do it. Even when sometimes, as has been happening to President Biden there are tons of a-holes dumping truckloads of sh!t on him as he climbs out of the hole!

So I say get the hell over what happened Thursday night and focus on the work ahead. That’s what the President is doing.  Pundits are furiously trying to turn a line of b.s. prophecy they spent years creating (the notion that Biden is old and infirm while Trump is mentally sharp and vigorous) into reality. For years as I’ve already said.  It’s no mystery why. The bosses in the executive suites and boardrooms, and even much of the “talent” (the people on TV and writers who get front page bylines) want to keep their goddamned tax cuts for the rich. And prevent regulation that might break up media empires and restore some balance to the news business.

Their professed concern for the country is nothing but SELF-interest. Keep that in mind when you hear/read their doom and gloom. Here’s a question – if THEY are sooooooo f**king smart and know how to get things done, to govern why don’t we ever see THEM running for office?  Those that can actually DO. Those that can’t pontificate.

We however can donate if we have the means. We can talk with friends, co-workers and people we meet about what’s at stake and remind them of all the good Biden has done, AND that he’s had countless public engagements where he was kicking butt and taking names. Tell them how Trump talks about America, like we’re some third-world sh!thole riddled with crime, looking like a war zone and streets lined with beggars and ask them if that’s what they see. Then tell them about what is, and how Joe Biden guided us out of the COVID pandemic, the jobs created on his watch, the infrastructure projects taking place (make sure they know not ONE Republican voted for it although they like to show up at groundbreaking ceremonies and take credit) and his international leadership.

It’s a grind. Once again I go back to my time (long, long ago) as an athlete. When an opponent had a “big inning” or in a basketball game went on a big “run” and all of a sudden there’s a lot of ground to be made up to win. There’s a choice to be made. To just give up and put in a token effort the rest of the game or dig in and fight your way back. You almost never get all the way back at once. You have to grind it out, little by little but if you buckle down and refuse to give in guess what? At the end you win. That’s where Democrats are right now. The Party can sing the “woe is me/us” tune and give up. Or get the hell to work, the hard, painstaking work of restoring some balance to our national discourse.

In SPITE of a chattering class of pundits who are gleefully patting themselves on the back for having set the conditions for a “Biden’s too old for the job” fall from the Presidency. He’s not. Trump IS. Never let yourself think for a moment otherwise. And both in your daily lives and on social media and blogs like this call out the pundits for their bullsh!t narrative!
