During her afternoon show yesterday on MSNBC, host Nicole Wallace talked to three former campaign strategists about the upcoming debate Thursday night and what we can expect of each of the candidates. From the Democratic sideline former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe doubts that Trump will be able to stick to his talking points and, if he is bested by the President, Plouffe doubts he will show up for the second contest saying…

“If Biden succeeds, “I’m not sure that Trump will debate on Sept. 10th. I wouldn’t expect him.”

Democratic Strategist Lis Smith meanwhile points out that Trump’s tactic of accusing his opponent of using debate enhancing drugs is nothing new and he has employed it in each of his three campaigns:

Democratic strategist Lis Smith said that Trump has been spinning his own tales of amped-up Democratic opponents on drugs since 2016.

“Let’s look at Donald Trump. This is not new, him accusing his opponent of doing drugs, using performance-enhancing drugs, and getting a ‘shot in the ass’ before the debate,” said Smith. “He did this with Joe Biden in 2020. He did it with Hillary Clinton in 2016. It is a bizarre tick of his.”

She said that Trump is a big boxing fan, so he speaks about debates in a way that is reminiscent of boxers trash-talking before the big match.“

To which I would only add that drumpf talks trash no matter the size of the contest…

But it was former George W. Bush campaign guru Matthew Dowd who stole the show when he introduced an analogy to describe the upcoming event, using two elderly gentlemen housesitting your home in terms of whom one could trust to do the job right…

“Wallace asked why Biden doesn’t simply hang the lantern around himself about the age issue. Dowd said he found the perfect way of describing the choices.

“And I’m not saying he would say this, but the choice here is the choice, if you have to, Nicolle, if you want someone to house sit your home and you have two elderly men you have to choose between,” Dowd described. “You have to pick one: One, this guy named Joe Biden who is elderly. He may forget to turn the porch light off, and he may take a nap or two. But he’s going to water your plants and feed your dog. Donald Trump, the house sitter, will kill your plants, sell your furniture, and kill your dog and probably let the burglars in so he could split the profits on whatever the burglar is going to get.”

“That is the choice between two older people that will sit your house,” said Dowd. “Somebody forgets the porch light and someone that will sell your furniture and kill your dog.”

My only critique of Dowd’s remarks is that Trump would probably leave the porch light on also, but would also likely manage to burn your house down before he left so you’d never notice…

Below is the clip on YouTube, the debate discussion begins around 24:00, Mr. Dowd’s remarks at 32:15…

My only critique of Dowd’s analogy is that Trump would likely leave your porch light on but also but manage to burn down your house so you wouldn’t notice.

And never trust someone who hates pets to watch your dog.
