Haley And DeSantis FINALLY Went There. In The Wimpiest Way, But You Can’t Un-ring Thoise Bells

Look, let’s be honest. The GOP primary debates are a ratings nightmare, for a very simple reason. The prohibitive GOP frontrunner, Traitor tot isn’t there. And as long as he isn’t on stage, then his slobbering Trombie army is busy watching monster truck rally reruns.

But they’re still important, and here’s why. While they may be garnering fewer reruns than the M*A*S*H* marathon, they’re still getting millions of viewers. And they’re not Trombies, which means that their minds are at least potentially open to other views, and open to a reality based point of view of past and current events.

Tonight’s matchup was pre-destined to be particularly horrendous. Due to the rules for entry, wither a 10% poll in either three national polls or Iowa polls, the only two who made the stage were Florida’s Flop Gov, Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor and Trump acolyte Nikki Haley. Which is like taking the two dumbest, most feral cats in the county into a sack to take them to the river.

And they didn’t disappoint. They spent the vast majority of the two hours of your life you’ll never get back spitting and clawing at each other. They slandered each others honesty and integrity, their positions, and even their records. Itt was like a debate between Joan Rivers and Andrew Dice Clay.

And especially after the scorched earth withdrawal of former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who not only excoriated Trump as a common criminal, but also savaged the other candidates like Haley and DeSantis for not taking on Trump’s authoritarianism and criminality head on. Subjects that these two ballot mice have run from like the sack for those two feral cats.

Fortunately the moderators had at least a modicum of journalistic integrity, and wouldn’t let these two chickensh*ts get away with that Ali Rope-a-dope nonsense. They hit each candidate with a targeted question that they couldn’t wriggle off of the hook from. And under the white hot glare of the lights, each of them said the last thing politically that they wanted to say, but the two thiings that everybody else had been praying to hear.

Let’s start with Nikki Haley. She was asked about Trump’s campaogn strategy of election denialism. Trapped and knowing it, Haley took a deep breath and said, Look, President Trump lost the 2020 election. Joe Biden won it fair and square. But for the last three years he’s been pushing these conspiracy theories, trying to make people angry and afraid, and we’re not talking about issues. Finally! One of the top three candidates for the GOP nomination, saying out loud on national television the simple fadct that Traitor Tot was nothing more than a sore loser who was trying to divide us.

And then it was DeSantis’s turn on the rotisserie. He was asked about Trump’s appeal argument, where his lawyer claimed that it would be legally allowed to assassinate a political opponent, like DeSantis, and not face any criminal liability if he was not impeached in the House and convicted in the Senate.

DeSantis took a deep breath, rocked on his elevator lifts, and while trying to take the sting out of it, finally said the obvious, Look, President Trump is going to lose that appeal, and he’ll lose it in the Supreme court if it goes there. He’s going to have to stand trial, in the middle of a campaign, with an all Democratic jury in DC, and good luck with that one. But what we should be asking ourselves as a party is, whether we want a convicted criminal as our standard bearer in November? Gee, I just loved that All Democratic jury in DC line. Why didn’t he just be a man, come right out and use the N-word?

But remember what I said earlier. As small as the television audience may be, it is highly likely to be made up of non Trump supporting GOP voters who would be more open to logic and reality based history. And what did they hear?

They heard Nikki Haley, Trump’s former UN Ambassador say that not only did Trump lose the 2020 election to Biden, he knew that he had lost the 2020 election, and was using conspiracy theories to gin up his troglodyte base. And while this admission may not be enough to convince these GOP voters to vote for Haley instead, it may make them more resistant to the idea of voting for Trump in November.

And DeSantis, as hard as he tried not to, really gilded the lily. While doing everythning in his power to take the sting out of it, DeSantios admitted that Trump’s bullsh*t absolute immunity claims were due to failure in the appellate system, he he really jumped the shark by admitting that under a purely Democratic DC jury, Trump was likely to come out of this as a convicted federal criminal. And then he jumped the shark by asking these moderate GOP voters if it was a good idea to have a convicted federal criminal carrying the GOP standard in the 2024 election?

And now match that up with Chris Christies nationally televised suspension of his campaign today, roasting Trump over an open fire as a purely criminal opportunist, this from a man who has known him for more than 20 years. Christie humbly admitted that in endorsing Trump for President, he mistakenly put political advancement ahead of moral and ethical duty. And he topped it off with the obvious accusation that if presented with a critical decision in the White House Trump would always put his own best interests in front of your best interests. A damning indictment coming from a man that in 2011 the moderate GOP begged Christie to save them from the fecklessness of a Romney presidential campaign.

Look, it’s still highly unlikely that anybody but the Orange Orangutan is going to be the GOP candidate for President. But just for a minute, f*cking forget about the MAGA mob. Nothing is going to move them. But even if Christie, who is now out of the race officially, continues to lambaste Trump as an obviously pig selfish, criminal opportunist that will place his own well being above those of his constituents, and Haley and DeSantis continue to harp on Trump’s LOSER status and obvious criminality, then they may be able to convince those malleable moderate voters to either vote for Biden, or just stay home. Especially when Trump’s federal criminal trial starts, and the evidence comes crashing down on his head.

You all know that I played organized hockey for 20 years. And I had plenty of sh*tty seasons when we were going nowhere. We called those character builders. And in those last 8-10 games, when we had nothing to play for, we loved nothing more than playing the role of spoiler. Busting our asses to win games against better teams to keep them from being able to realize their dreams. And right now, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley are in a perfect position to play the part of spoiler. And I’ll be the first one to tell you, when you’re in that position? Ot. Feels. Good.
