I keep predicting the demise of the current GOP and the rise of a new conservative party from the ashes but headlining that effort is Ken Buck, who is already a character out of political satire or political crime fiction. But politics is so strange nowadays that maybe it makes sense on some level that a character like Buck would lead a new party, or a new faction of the existing party at the very least.

Buck was hired by Dick Cheney to investigate Iran Contra back in the day, a questionable bona fide, but if it ended there, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But it didn’t. Buck was just getting warmed up. He went on to raid the offices of a local tax preparer because he suspected that illegal aliens were stealing Social Security numbers. The ACLU sued him and that action was ruled unconstitutional.

Then he effectively ended his prosecutorial career when he met with defense attorneys about indicting three men for felonies in a case he thought should not be pursued.[11][16] Only one of the three men initially indicted on felony charges was convicted, for a misdemeanor offense. Buck was formally reprimanded and required to take an ethics class. Then there was the rape case he refused to prosecute as District Attorney even though the defendant admitted to the rape. The anecdotes go on.

Now here’s a comment Buck made a few days ago and the wording is glaring. Take a look.

The moral clarity to RULE? Gee, I thought this was a representative democracy, a constitutional republic, and we elected people to GOVERN. Silly me. And here’s what Buck said this morning.

Here’s the rebuttal from right-wingnuttia.

Interesting that Buck didn’t join with Cheney or Kinzinger when he could have, if he felt so strongly about the Big Lie.

Things are getting pretty wild in Trump world right now. Courtesy of Charlie Sykes’ newsletter.

  • Eight years ago, former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal called then-candidate Donald Trump an “egomaniacal madman”; an “entertaining narcissist… full of foolishness and nonsense”; a “power-hungry shark” who “eats whatever is in front of him”; a “non-serious carnival act”; and “unstable”. Back in 2013, Jindal famously called for the GOP to “stop being the stupid party.”

    Today?

  • On Monday, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, endorsed election denying fabulist Kari Lake for a seat in the U.S. Senate. It was her first (but unlikely to be her last) major establishment endorsement. He fawned:

Kari Lake will shine brightly for Arizona. She is a generational communicator who is giving voice to Arizona citizens. Kari Lake is in this race to make Arizona and America stronger.

And, finally,

And Wagner’s not the only one to flip. So did Michael McCaul and Mike Rogers. Here’s who’s left in the Jordan opposition.

“Reps. Don Bacon (R., Neb.), Ken Buck (R., Colo.), Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.), Carlos Gimenez (R., Fla.), Mike Kelly (R., Pa.) and Mike Lawler (R. N.Y.) That is enough to stop Jordan from being elected speaker, if all Democrats show up and vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) and no one changes the math by voting “present.” To win the speakership, a candidate must win a majority of all those voting for an individual,” says the Wall Street Journal.

This will be another historic vote as the House jumps from the frying McCarthy pan into the Jordan fire and self immolates.

The idea of Jordan second in line from the presidency horrifies me. But. as stated before, with Jordan as Speaker, God forbid, we will see a Democratic turnout like to blow your mind in 2024. Maybe that’s the way this goes down. Maybe Jordan fires up the electorate to give back the House to the Democrats and widen the margin of the majority in the Senate.

  1. Wonder what dem will be running for Buck’s seat in congress? I’m thinking Buck’s primary opponent might be too crazy. Might be a seat ripe for taking.

    • If he does get primaried by a MAGA that will say a lot. MAGA is a Trump personality cult. I don’t know how well they’re going to fare without Trump on the ticket. I guess we’ll find out.
