I don’t need you anymore. I might in 4 years if I run again, but I don’t need you anymore right now   Donald Trump at 2017 Thank You America rally

This has deteriorated much too far, much too fast. The dye for what now passes as the GOP is cast, and they forged it themselves. After all, if the thank-you-speech from an 88 year old, worn fed dotard for an endorsement is, I’d have to be stupid to refuse an endorsement from a man who has 91% of the Iowa GOP in his pocket, and I ain’t stupid, there are no more questions. This is Trump’s party.

The death cult that is loosely called the GOP is all-in on doing it 1trump’s way. They are mesmerized by Trump’s base, and every GOP incumbent, as well as every candidate in 2022 is trying to out Trump Trump, to motivate the base into returning them to power at least in the House, if not the Senate as well. But it’s coming at a cost.

Trump’s rhetoric is getting more violent and aggressive, even by inference, and others are following suit. In Michigan, a GOP candidate for state Attorney General vowed before a throng of rabid Trombies to have the current Democratic Attorney General locked up for refusing to overturn the 2020 election results, and the Democratic Governor too. He then went on to say that he needed an army to fight for Trump. This to a crowd with more than 1.3% IQ flags flying in the breeze.

In 2016, Trump was elected thanks to a loosely basted coalition of despondent Republicans, along with disgruntled independents and Democrats who rolled the dice. 4 years later, Trump lost his reelection bid by more than 7 million votes. And the first rats off of the sinking ship. The disgruntled soft GOP voters, and the pissed off independents and Democrats. Trump Fatigue was a very real thing in 2020. And both Trump, as well as the GOP writ large are deteriorating.

At Trump’s 90 minute verbal fart of free association bullshit, several reporters showed admirable journalistic restraint. For once, they just walked around listening to the crowd instead of peppering people with questions. And what they heard surprised them. While Trump’s supporters were still all in as supporters, and thought that his voice was sorely needed in GOP leadership, a surprising number told friends that they thought it was time for somebody else to take their shot in 2024. They still love Trump, but they’re sick of the bullshit that comes with a Trump presidency. This could end up being a devastating blind spot for the GOP, confusing his basic popularity with the base with their desire to see him run again in 2024.

And it’s getting worse. You have the National Association of School Boards requesting federal assistance to maintain order and safety at school board meetings, because Trump thugs are reenacting the Hitler brown shirt in Berlin in the mid 1930’s. And thanks to the continued uncertainty of the insane and intentionally unconstitutionally illegal SN8 in Texas basically banning abortion, the GOP is risking sending white suburban women to the Democrats in 2022 in numbers not seen since 2018. But there’s dessert!

Ever since 2016, a lingering story has been the mass of mainstream moderate GOP voters that Trump either drove into hiding, or turned into Never Trumper’s! Well, they’re uniting to the threat. Former CIA analyst Evan McMullen is running against GOP incumbent Mike Lee in Utah as an independent, hoping to rally disaffected Republicans, and hopefully even the Utah Democratic party to back him to flip that seat. The Lincoln Project is torturing Trump and GOP incumbents, and now is out to crimp AT&T’s nut’s for being a major backer of the One America Network, which has led to a national boycott against AT&T. And now, former GOP Governor Christine Todd Whitman has joined forces with Trump whistleblower Miles Taylor, who penned the anonymous editorial to the New York Times about how there were GOP insiders who were trying to put the brakes on Trump’s worst impulses, fronting a funded group to reach out to traditional moderate GOP voters to cross over en masse and vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot in 2022, as well as 2024 if necessary in order to save both democracy as well as the Republican party.

Trump is all in on 2022. He is already endorsing whack-a-mole candidates to run in primaries against incumbents who were disloyal to him, including Liz Cheney. Which has led former President George W Bush to host fund raisers for her. But it all comes down to 2022. There is a sizeable portion of the GOP who don’t really support Trump, but who are along for the ride, since it is easier than resisting. And if the Democrats actually end up solidifying the House and Senate in 2022, that is going to send tectonic shocks through the GOP as to exactly what their future is under Trump’s thumb.

The Democrats can have all the help they need in 2022, but they have to step up to the plate. They have to quit dicking around and get the reconciliation bill done so that Biden can sign both bills, and show the agenda moving with benefits obvious by spring. But they also need to muzzle Manchin and Sinema and reform the filibuster to get voting rights passed, to undo the odious bills passed by the GOP states in 2021. Lightening doesn’t strike twice, so the Democrats had better catch it in a bottle this time around.

  1. The Ds need to get people who know how to do PR and get their messages out to the public. So far, that’s one lesson they *still* haven’t learned.

  2. The Texas anti choice bill is the biggest turd in the republican election chances in 2022. Mcconnel created it by grifting trump 3 supreme court appointments. Most people like some sort of balanced government. For decades people have seen the judiciary as middle of the road and balanced that with the executive and legislative back and forth, tending toward the center. Now that the judicial has plunged right, I suspect there will be a turn to the left on the legislature to curb judicial activism on the right at the supreme court. my two cents

  3. Lyle Larson is not running for reelection to the Texas State House. He is significant in that he is an old school country club republican who has clashed with abbot and danny patty. He is advocating that Joe Straus, another country club republican, run for as an independent. Larson may join him and run against danny patty for lite gov. When abbot et al jumped so far to the right they basically just represented the interests of the 25% who are trump supporters. That left a lot of ground in the middle for this kind of run.
