The GOP is a rudderless ship right now, tossing on the waves. It can’t find direction because it doesn’t want to move forward, because that would mean moving past Trump. So it just wallows and lists. This week in Salt Lake City the Republican National Committee is meeting and they’re going to consider a resolution made by Trump ally David Bossie to expel Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. If that happens, it will make quite a statement. Washington Post:

The resolution has circulated among party officials and members in recent days. It is co-sponsored by Frank Eathorne, the state chairman of the Wyoming Republican Party and a Trump ally. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has not taken a position on the resolution.

The resolution is expected to be debated by RNC members in Salt Lake City this week, where the party gathers for its annual meeting, according to Republican Party officials and RNC members. Should the resolution pass, it would be an unusual and public rebuke from a political party against two of its incumbent members of Congress.

In the resolution, Bossie cites the pair’s work for the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as a reason they should be expelled from being Republicans, along with their efforts to “destroy President Trump,” according to people with knowledge of the document. In the document, he says the two should focus on helping Republicans win back the House of Representatives instead of helping Democrats through their work on the committee, people familiar with the document say. […]

“The leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to ‘overturn’ a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy,” Cheney said. “I’m a constitutional conservative and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge. I will never stop fighting for our constitutional republic. No matter what.”

This is historic. Liz Cheney is the heir to Dick Cheney, a major power broker in the GOP for many years and vice president for eight. This is as establishment Republican as you can get. And there’s a resolution to expel her?

I don’t think the resolution will pass either. But the fact that it’s even in existence is a sad commentary on the state of the Republican party.

  1. It’s time to stop calling it the Republican party. It’s the Trump party now and its philosophy is blatant fascism. I suspect it will expel Cheney & Kinzinger, just because that’s what Trump wants. Republicans in Congress have proven over and over again that they have no spine, no morality and no shame. What they have is Donald Trump. As Rick Wilson’s book title says: Everything Trump Touches Dies. RIP GOP.

  2. If they are actually stupid enough to go this far, they’ll have done Kinzinger and Cheney a favor. Anybody still THIS loyal to Trump at this late date is going to get burned in what’s coming. When they finally burn themselves out, Cheney (or as I frequently call her, Evil Carrie Fisher) will rebuild the party in her image or make a new one if need be. Any clout the Trump cult currently has will be long gone by that point.

  3. I actually like Liz’s odds on this. If they pass the resolution, they make her a martyr to true conservatism. If the vote fails, Trump has lost even more juice. Kinzinger is a non-factor as he is retiring. The GQP has put themselves in a no-win situation. The longer this civil war in the GQP goes on, the better for us.

    • And the better for Cheney. She wins no matter what. Only degenerate gamblers like her alleged fellow party members bet against the house like this.

  4. In a fight between Liz Cheney and former guy-I’ll have to pick the one with more intelligence AND more $$$. That’d be Liz. Her daddy is quite a bit tonier than former guy and I’m pretty sure he’ll bring all of his cronies and their bucks to this fight.

Party of Lincoln? Not for a very long time. Buh-bye ‘pubes.
