“L’etat, c’est moi,” is what you just heard tonight, if you were one of the attendees at the Lincoln Reagan dinner, where Donald Trump was the keynote speaker. Trump is you and you are Trump. I am he and you are he as you are me and we all all together. Goo goo g’joob. And we’re all running for president next year, isn’t that good to know?
So is Trump channeling John Lennon from the grave to be his speechwriter? Beats me. I just know that this entire political situation in this country has gotten even more bizarre than it was in 2015 and I did not think I would see that again in my lifetime.
2015 was a freak show. We were all unprepared for it. But it was thought that when Trump was defeated, and by a sound margin, in 2020, that we were done with that chapter in our lives and politics would move on. The GOP can’t move on. Unless something completely amazing and unexpected happens soon, you are looking at the GOP candidate for 2024. And he is talking crazy.
The man is bat$hit. It makes perfect sense that he’s trashing Joe Biden. That’s part of the package and plan. But this elevation of himself to a deific level has been building for a while. He is not just “fighting for the soul of America” he IS the soul of America, in his heroic, digital card images and in his dreams.
If the soul of America is a philandering, twice-impeached, dictator-worshipping conman, in the thrall of Russia, then America is shot. America can just lie down and die. And I guess that this is how Trump is going to frame this election, in these crazed existential terms.
And make no mistake, for Trump, this IS an existential matter. No two ways about that. Yes, if he can get elected and pardon himself, or something cockamamie like that, then he can avoid legal jeopardy, redeem his “good name,” prove it was all a political witch hunt, etc. These are his talking points and this is where he’s going, clearly.
Do we have any other possibilities? I don’t see Ron DeSantis getting the nomination. I suppose that some long shot could take place and he could. Maybe DeSantis is like Trump and he under polls. Maybe, when it gets down to it, people won’t say they’re voting for DeSantis but then they actually will do so in a primary. That would be interesting to see if it happens. Perhaps we will see that. That would truly be something out of left field and it certainly would be a game changer. But I think the reality is that DeSantis was the fantasy that the big money people dreamt up to be the successor to Trump. It was a nice dream while it lasted and now, unfortunately, people are awake and Trump is still there.
Likewise, I don’t see Mike Pence or Nikki Haley making much of a dent in anything. So it looks like we’re stuck with the crazy old man shouting at the clouds — and the political plots and the conspiracies, etc.
The question then becomes, can he win? I didn’t think America was insane enough in 2016 to let that happen and I was wrong. I have a hard time imagining that America is insane enough in 2024 to put this bum back in office. But that’s not my real problem. My real problem is that I cannot believe that here we are again, with democracy in an existential crisis and the GOP putting this conman back on the top of its ticket — for a third time.
The GOP has nobody else and evidently there is some belief that Trump can return, as a kind of kamikaze phoenix, rising from the ashes only to take us right back down into total destruction, as a people. Trump is the anti-Christ with the evangelical blessing and the anti-Eisenhower, the man who would be America’s first fascist leader, going against every instinct and principle of all the presidents that have gone before him.
Maybe it’s too soon to panic. Maybe what will really happen is Trump will be a complete laughing stock as his legal problems mount and Joe Biden continues to steer the ship of state calmly. I hope so.
If Biden beats Trump like a drum, again, that will be a good thing. But the fact that Trump is still in the picture to this level, after all that has come before, is an appalling statement about the utter failure of the GOP, which is now but a memory. We have one functioning political party in this country and one rotted husk and you see what’s crawled out of it. Same thing that crawled out eight years ago. He’s still the best and only thing they’ve got.
And maybe he will stay on the scene until his mad marriage to the GOP is parted by his death. Maybe Trump will run again in 2028. Who knows anymore?
Is this part of some grand plan to claim dementia when Jack Smith inevitably indicts his fat behind? He’s always been delusional, but this is, to quote Shrub, “some crazy sh*t.”
Trump projects like mad. He always has. So this is his projection of, “Oh my God, I’m desperate. They’re coming to get me.” It now becomes, “Oh my God, you don’t know how desperate your situation is. They’re coming to get YOU!” He has said as much.
And they should go after them. Trump is nothing but a fun house reflection of the Republican voter.
Joe Biden is the one who is the foqq up! The country was much better off with Trump. All these people who back Biden are not even Americans. They are a bunch of communist boot lickers named Karen and Brandon!

If Trump should win in 2024, it’s only because millions of Americans, and nearly all GOP leaders, are willing to demolish liberty, democracy, and integrity in government. It’s not hyperbole to say that the enemy lives among us. I, for one, have cut ties with those (including close relatives) who have bought into this cult.
