Trump’s Tulsa Wedgie. Something Else To Consider.

I haven’t had a case of the political warm and fuzzies like this since I can’t even remember when. watching that camera pan around the arena, almost completely empty balconies exposed, made my heart sing. All night long, all I could think of was His Lowness, storming and stomping around in Air Force 1, throwing shit and stomping the cockpit to demand that the pilot divert and bomb Denmark, while the aides and staff all rode home in the baggage pits for safety. Sometimes life can be sweet.

But underneath the indescribable joy of watching Trump go down like a dude with arms full of beer bottles on a patch of ice, there are quite possibly a couple of very important things that can be learned from this debacle. Things that could impact the race going forward.

For starters, something obviously went wrong with the planning. I don’t know if it was arrogance, or ring rust after 3 months of inactivity, but they laid a serious egg. And it isn’t like Trump hasn’t had smaller than anticipated crowds before. The campaign simply moves the stage, cordons off an area, and uses ceiling to floor drapes to hide the empty seats. It had to be terrifying for the staff to get to an hour before showtime, and realize that there was no way to cover up the acres of empty seats that Trump was going to walk in front of. Mark my words, heads will roll over this.

But there was worse news for the campaign out of this monumental flop. Much worse news. Reporters at the event who interviewed attendees as they were leaving were told by many that while they enjoyed seeing Trump, and liked what he had to say, they were also disappointed. They said that for large portions of the show, he appeared listless and lethargic, almost as if he were just performing the lines by rote. Personally, I chalk that up to Trump’s disappointment with the crowd size, as well as being distracted by his anger at his staff for their failure.

But no matter how you slice it, this is going to have a negative impact on Trump. He is entirely egocentric, and this rally was supposed to be his triumphal return to campaigning, surrounded by his slavish followers, and recharging his badly depleted ego. It’s bad enough that the place was 1/3 empty, but if Trump actually hears feedback that the crowd largely left unsatisfied, that will kick his paranoia to a brand new level. It will be interesting how long it takes the campaign to gird their loins and have another event, where they hold it, and what precautions they take to safeguard another failure.

But Trump and his campaign aren’t the only ones who should be scared shitless right now. You know who else should be having night terrors? Walking Port-A Potties like Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Joni Ernst, Corey Gardner, Martha McSally, and yes, even Lindsey Graham. They embarrassed themselves publicly, whored their principles and morals, and spattered mud all over their dignity. And for what? To keep from offending and possibly losing Trump’s rabid base. But what happens if after 3 1/2 years of constant ridicule and scandal, Trump’s base has finally become disenchanted and tired enough to slither back under their rocks?  And what of Matt Gaetz? His gas mask trick in congress went over real well in a state drowning in coronavirus cases, and he really endeared himself to black voters this week. Jim Jordan sees the presidential race in Ohio tightening, and he has the OSU wrestling scandal to deal with. And just how much Louie Gohmert is too much Louie Gohmert, anyway?

This is about so much more than just one rally with a piss poor turnout. Trump went all in on a spectacular event to reassert his dominance, and it came a cropper. If that rally was actually a kind of confirmation of the national and swing state polling, then come November Trump is going to be wearing the kind of coattails that nobody is going to want to go for a ride on. But it’s too late to get off now. Sucks to be them, doesn’t it?

    • Bareshark, I don’t know what else to think…As I told PJ in a comment in my other article, sure, there may have been a little ratfucking going on with ticket hogging, but so what…Back in 2016, Trump would sell out a rally in a few hours, and thoisands of people would still stand in line hoping for no shows, only to be turned away…In 2016 that event would have been SRO…I’m looking forward to find out exacrtlyt what has changed, but this doesn’t look good for His Lowness…

    • just for the laugh, I looked, and there *is* a Waterloo in Oklahoma. (It must be a wide spot in a road, though, because it’s not in my 2018 Rand-McNally.)

      • According to our old friend, Google, it appears that Waterloo is now a neighborhood within the city of Edmond. Apparently, the only remaining significant point of interest is a cemetery of that name. (One site dedicated to Oklahoma cemeteries–www.okcemeteries.net–leads with this: “Waterloo Cemetery is named for the no-longer existing town site of Waterloo, 5 miles north of downtown Edmond. The original name was Brayton. There was a steep grade near the site where, according to local legend, a Santa Fe Railway engineer almost met his Waterloo. Thereafter the community was known as Waterloo. Waterloo had a post office from April 9, 1892 to June 6, 1930.”)

      • Brad REALLY should have thought about evoking the most expensive military boondoggle in sci-fi history. At this rate, I expect Joe Biden to be holding a gauntlet full of magic rocks and sneering at Donald, “And I…Am…Mr. President!”

  1. After the big fail in Tulsa, even the TRumpsters couldn’t lie 6,200 int a “Million MAGAt March”, and tRump’s demand to the AF One pilots was not to bomb Denmark, it was to divert to Moscow.

  2. Good one Mr. Murphy, you summed it all up very well. I myself was tickled to death to see all those blue seats (see what I did there….)at the rally.

Let’s all hope that this is just the beginning of many, many fails for President Tweet, with spectacular and expensive disappointments and lots of empty stadiums – all on the GOP’s dime and at the expense of tRump’s ego too.
    HA!
Onward and BLUE all the way.
    Thanks again.

  3. I think you are right. The rest of these people have to feel like real fools for getting on his bandwagon. It looks like it is all over for tRump but the shouting (which will come from himself). Wow, so he gets 4-5 more months for this to sink in.

  4. Hell is about to freeze over: I’m going to say something nice about Gohmert. when Swallwell pushed it, Gohmert said the words “Black Lives Matter.” Shocking right?

    • As Shakespeare put it, Hell is empty and all the devils are here. The latter are about to regret the change of address. **evil smile**

  5. One correction and I think it’s significant. The arena was NOT 2/3 full. The Tulsa Fire Dept. released an official count of attendance in the arena of 6200 give or take. That means the 19,000 seat arena was only ONE-THIRD full, or 2/3 Empty if you want to look at it that way. And as widely shown on Trump’s magic tee vee box there weren’t hoards of people outside either.

After all that hype, a truly pathetic crowd.

Thanks for this article because while I’ve had many a smile today over Trump’s humiliation it never occurred to me to look beyond what the lack of enthusiasm for himself portends for his hangers-on. If there’s another attempt and they lay another big, rotten egg it could make for some interesting times this fall with Democrats pushing for legislation that needs to get done and should already have been done. Personally I think the Senators you mentioned are fucked no matter what. They surgically attached their lips to Trump’s fat ass and trying to remove them at this point is an exercise in futility. Regardless of what has happened (even if it happens again) there are enough rabid MAGAts out there that will by refusing to vote for these Senators (as a punishment) it could tip some races our way.
