Maybe we should have a coda to Everything Trump Touches Dies. Maybe it should be, “the Dying Approach Trump, knowing their time is short,” or words to that effect. Todd Blanche, who is the main A-number one, top of the list Team Trump lawyer is being sued for malpractice along with his former law partners. People Magazine:

Blanche is a former federal prosecutor. His move to join Trump’s legal team came after leaving New York City’s oldest law firm, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, where he was a partner for five years.

The lawyer’s decision to part ways with the white-collar defense and investigations practice was learned via an email sent from Blanch to the firm. Politico obtained the email and was the first to report the news.

“I have been asked to represent Trump in the recently charged DA case, and after much thought/consideration, I have decided it is the best thing for me to do and an opportunity I should not pass up,” Blanche said in the note.

He may also have known that he was about to be sued and decided to jump onto the Trump ship, so as to grab a fat retainer fee and the opportunity to write a book about this mess when all is said and done. Raw Story:

Todd Blanche and his former law firm, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, are being sued for malpractice by twin brothers Adam Kaplan and Daniel Kaplan, who allege Blanche and Cadwalader forged their signatures on a retainer agreement and “severely” overbilled them while while they were the subject of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe.

The Kaplan brothers also reportedly allege their former attorneys are now refusing to turn over their case file to their new lawyers.

Those are some hefty charges, especially for a white shoe law firm. But, if one is speculating, it does answer (at least partially) why Blanche would want to go to work for Trump. If he saw storm clouds brewing elsewhere and he saw a fat retainer and a book deal in his immediate future, then it all tends to make a lot more sense than it did even one day ago.

Even yesterday people were wondering why in the world Todd Blanche would leave a prestigious law firm and go to work for Donald Trump. Now things are making a bit more sense.

Now the question becomes, does Trump know?

  2. I saw this story several hours ago but unlike you failed to make the connection between Blanche’s departure from his old firm and going to work for Trump. Back when he jumped on the Trump train I thought he must have wrangled one HELL of a HUGE upfront retainer that was ironclad in him being able to hang on to the whole thing even if he was fired by Trump or walked away well before the billable hours came anything close to the amount in that upfront retainer. That combined with what he’d banked from partnership in his prestigious firm the money from Trump would allow for a very comfy early retirement. After all, someone of his stature would be “done” when it comes to getting another partnership with a top law firm. Kind of like the assassin in the book version of Day of the Jackal who tells his potential employers balking at his price doing the job means the man who does it will never be able to work again.

Your noting he probably knew this lawsuit was coming does in fact make it all make sense. On top of everything else I’ll bet Trump has coated the walls with a foot’s worth of ketchup! For a guy who loves getting one over on other people he got suckered for a change and for millions. Brings a smile to MY face. As for the lawsuit, from where I sit it’s one of those “if you strike at the king you must kill him” things. Unless I’m badly misinformed or things have changed (been years since I’ve had actual lawyer friends that I communicated with regularly) lawyers HATE even reporting on other lawyers, much less suing them. And that’s just run of the mill lawyers that work in very small “firms” or only have a shingle out with one or two names on it.

For a high profile, successful lawyer from a respected firm suing for malpractice is breathtaking. And not something that is done unless your case is bulletproof. It takes serious misconduct and more than one thing, a single boneheaded “oops” screwup to get someone high profile sued. Think about all the stuff Michael Avenatti did, that finally came out when Stormy Daniels got a talented and ethical lawyer with guts. You know all this better than I do but I don’t see someone like Todd Blanche being sued unless as with Avenatti there are multiple misdeeds and their are “receipts” for most of them.

Maybe the funniest part about this is that we’ve joked about lawyers who’ve gotten into legal trouble for their actions working for Trump, the whole Trump’s lawyers needed lawyers stuff. All justified. THIS adds a whole new dimension to it! Trump is so hard up for good legal talent he winds up with lawyers who need lawyers for stuff they did wrong before they even came to work for him!
