There are some pretty bad candidates running in the GOP primary for Roy Blunt’s seat, which is available because Roy Blunt is leaving politics. And God knows Roy Blunt was no prize. He rarely could be troubled to show up to vote and in the final analysis, that is pretty much the bottom line of why you’re in congress to begin with, to vote. Blunt had trouble rising to the lowest bar possible.

But not surprisingly, Blunt was a better prize for Missouri than the slate of candidates battling for the GOP nomination. At the front of the pack are Vicki Hartzler, Eric Schmitt, and still crazy after all these years, Eric Greitens. Greitens decided that leaving politics just because of a dust up over tying up his hairdresser in the basement, photographing her, and then blackmailing her, was too small of a matter to stay out of public life. And, in the age of Trump, as insane as things have gotten, he may well be right.

So this is where things stand on the eve of the Missouri primary. Donald Trump is getting involved, because of course he is.

Yes, Donald wants you to get all excited, wondering who will get the benediction of the Mango Monarch.

Eric Greitens is running third, 17 points behind Schmitt and 5 points behind Hartzler, according to The Hill. Missouri GOPers are running attack ads day and night to keep Greitens in third place.

Now here’s what Greitens has going for him. This is the high card he just played.

Flattery will get you everywhere with Donald Trump. Ask Vladimir Putin. Ask Kim Jong Un.

Schmitt may be leading but Trump probably won’t endorse him, if he believes that Greitens is right and Schmitt is not a devotee of the Trump cult. One must bend the knee. On the other hand, because Schmitt is leading may be precisely why Trump will endorse him. That way he can appear to be the kingmaker, when all he did was literally show up the day before the primary.

Trump said back on July 11 that he would not support Vicki Hartzler. So we can safely color her gone — although maybe not. Trump has been known to endorse somebody that he wouldn’t endorse at first. Katie Britt in Alabama is the proof of that. So Hartzler may not be out of the running for the coveted Trump endorsement.

Trump had praise for Eric Greitens earlier in July.  He called him “tough” and “smart” albeit “a little controversial.” What’s a little domestic violence among friends?

So the question now, literally at the 11th hour, is who is going to get Trump fairy dust sprinkled their way? I don’t vote Schmitt. I think the question is whether Trump picks Greitens, which is what the local GOP is praying he won’t do, (because getting back at the RINOs is a yuuge motivation) or will he do a Katie Britt and endorse Hartlzer, even though he said last month she “didn’t have what it takes.”

I hope it’s Greitens. Although, that may put mud on Trump’s face, because the GOP is hell bent that Schmitt gets the nomination and he is leading by 17 points.

Let’s see what Trump does to upset the apple cart. Right now he’s probably consulting the Ouija board or throwing the I Ching.

  1. Some Dems think Greitens would maybe put this seat in play. I don’t know how popular Hawlin’ Ass Hawley is back in his sister’s home state, but I think he endorsed Hartzler. If TFG endorses anyone today, it would probably be whoever is in the lead in polling. That’s what he did in PA.
